We saw a lactation consultant on Friday and she didn't mention anything about seeing an upper lip tie, but some research this weekend led me to look more closely. I'm having a hard time getting her to take a deeper latch and she's got a nursing blister on her center upper lip. What do you think?

I can't see very well, but it looks like it to me. I would try to get in to see an ENT who specializes in lip/tongue ties asap. I didn't realize that's what Julia had until it was too late to fix it. I was never comfortable nursing and always struggled with supply. I'm definitely going to be checking this baby for lip/tongue tie issues.

Just to add my 2 cents, I see a small one but an upper lip tie has to be relatively severe for an ENT to clip it. Jack has one and I thought it was going to be this great fix and they refused to clip it.

I see it. It looks like both of my kids. We got our second child's clipped but not the first child and I really wish we had because I never had a great nursing relationship with him and it's caused a huge gap in his teeth.
I should think any knowledgeable ENT would clip that for you since it connects so low on the gum line. That can definitely cause dental problems down the road and the fact that you're struggling with nursing/latch is another huge red flag.

I wouldn't be worried about the nursing blister but I agree, that looks like an upper lip tie. I would get it looked at and probably clipped.

Will any ENT look at/clip a lip tie, or do you have to find a specialist? My son has one from getting his tubes that I could call, but I guess I never realized they do that kind of thing too.
@Ginger333: The LC actually didn't say anything about a lip or tongue tie, either in the hospital or at our appt last week. I just saw it myself today while trying to figure out why it's so hard to get her to spread her upper lip out.

I just noticed my LO has the same upper lip tie. She sometimes can get her lip to curl up while nursing but not always. Neither my midwives nor LC noticed it.

@SeptMomma12: can you call the ped's office and just verbally ask for a recommendation to an ENT? They should give you that over the phone and surely she/he can recommend one that the office has referred other kids to. Our ped gave us a sheet of them and circled three ENT's she recommended
You can also try googling ENTs that fix ties with lasers-I hear it's far better and probably something they advertise

Usually they go together - lip and tongue ties ... in Ontario we can have lip/tongue ties released by a number of people including dentist. If one person won't do it, keep calling. It makes such a difference.
Until then, this technique is what we recommend to moms with upper lip tie babies - it's called the "flipple"
(edited to add: I didn't know it would embed in the post, not sure if that's okay or allowed ...)

@SeptMomma12: I'm not sure. We've had some weight gain/supply issues which I'm now wondering if they are related. I'm going to ask my midwife on Thursday. I'll let you know if they think it does have an impact.

@coopsmama: the same thing happened with my sister's children. With her first, the LC and ped noticed the tongue tie and it was clipped in the hospital. She still had residual discomfort though while nursing and noticed a lip tie way down the road, when I noticed it in my daughter. By then it was too late for both (would have required anesthesia). Whe her second was born, he had both a lip and tongue tie. She got them both clipped right away and it made a huge difference.
ETA: both the LCs in the hospital and at the weekly support group I attended missed J's lip tie (until later, when I pointed it out). I remember them checking for a tongue tie, but they didn't look at her lip and I didn't know enough to look for it myself. They all said she had a pretty good latch, yet even 6+ months out I was still cringing in pain.
