Has anyone had experience with an upper lip tie? Breastfeeding has not been going super well for us & baby's chiropractor told us today that baby has an upper lip tie & this could be a big factor in his poor latch/inefficient sucking. We have an appointment in 2 weeks to have it fixed. Has anyone had this procedure done? Did it help with breastfeeding?

My big girl had a tongue and lip tie and would constantly lose suction when nursing (she made a "clicking" noise). Things definitely improved once she had her ties cut so I'm definitely in support of having ties cut if it could help!

Yes and once treated, it made a huge difference. A word of caution: it is extremely rare, as in pretty much never, to have an ULT without also having a posterior tongue tie. Both need to be corrected to see much improvement.

That's what LO had along with a tongue tie. It hasn't improved BFing yet, but we have other issues. There was a definite improvement in her sucking on the bottle.

@erinpye: the ENT who is fixing the upper lip will look at the tongue as well. So far no one has seen anything but he is the expert so we shall see!
@Kemma: @erinpye: @Torchwood: glad to hear it helped! my guy has a shallow latch & doesn't suck efficiently. Luckily it hasn't affected my supply but I'll be looking forward to not having blanched nipples after the procedure!

My daughter had an upper lip tie and posterior tongue tie. I didn't have pain associated with nursing and she was gaining great. Which is unusual. But after having the tongue tie fixed (at 8 weeks) nursing was night and day. We had the laser procedure done by a dentist. You should look at the information on dr. gheheri's website. There is also a great tongue tie group on facebook with lots of information including preferred providers.

We had it done for our daughter when she was six weeks old! It really helped her. You won't regret doing it.

@Kemma: @erinpye: we got the lip tie released yesterday and sure enough there was a posterior tongue tie present. How long did it take for your little ones to latch better or for you to notice a difference in nursing? I know it's not going to happen straight away but last night was pretty torturous since DS was even less inclined to open his mouth since he was in a bit of discomfort

@Portboston: We had our LO's lip tie corrected (with laser) at 5 days. I had extreme pain and nipple trauma after that, and we discovered a hidden tongue tie at 9 weeks.
For me, I think the TT had more to do with my pain and her ability to transfer than the LT. But, I know that a LT can cause BFing issues for many babies, and later in life, it can cause speech and dental issues. The procedure is fast, and heals quickly. I'd give baby a little Motrin (if doc says ok) before the procedure, and keep some Hyland's Teething Gel on hand for the stretching exercises (definitely ask doc about these).

ETA: I see that the thread was from a week ago. It took us about 2 weeks after the tongue tie procedure before I was noticing a change in pain. Sadly, at 11 weeks my low supply had been established, so it never helped my supply. BUT, but 12 weeks, I was nursing pain free (so 3 weeks after the procedure). I hope you see positive results soon!!

@Portboston: It could be a lot sooner for you. By 9 weeks, I had extreme nipple trauma, so I imagine that's why it took so long to heal. I wasn't even BFing at that point ... I had to pump for 2 weeks, because her latch hurt so bad. I noticed an immediate change in her latch ... Any chance you're working with Luna Lactation for lactation care? If not, maybe give her a call. She has so many amazing exercises to do with baby's mouth to help improve latch after the tt release.

@Portboston: my baby was already 6 months old, so she latched better very quickly, but I know it's not uncommon to take a while. I'd do 1-2 appointments of craniosachral therapy to help baby loosen up all the tension from a tight jaw and overcompensating for the ties, and ask your LC about suck training.
Hang in there, sweet mama. The hard part is over and it will be so worth it!

@erinpye: @littlejoy: we actually started CST before we even knew about the ties. The chiropractor is the one who caught the lip tie when 3 hospital lactation consultants & two pediatricians did not!!! I'm so thankful for that. We had another appointment with her today and will continue weekly for at least 2 more weeks

@erinpye: We had a pretty long strenuous labor and birth so I think the CST is helping him release some of that tension. Plus, I'll do whatever it takes!!! I really want to be able to have a good nursing relationship!
