Xander is in daycare full-time, but I actually have every other Friday off, so I usually keep him home with me on those days so we can spend some extra time together. This Friday is one of those days... but I really need a pedicure! Do you think it's okay if I just drop Xander off at daycare for a couple hours in the middle of the day so that I can go get one?? Or if I'm going to bring him to daycare, should I drop him off early like normal and then just pick him up earlier whenever I'm done?

If he's not in daycare that day you have to tell them you want to bring him in. You can't just randomly show up and drop him off. I'm assuming this is a center?
If you are going to drop him off I would do it per usual and maybe pick him up early.

You're paying for him to be there, so I'd think they'd be thrilled to be paid but have the parents pick him up early. I'd just work around their scheduled nap times...but other than that--I can't see how they'd have a problem either way.
But maybe one of the Bees who has worked in a daycare has better insight? My instincts are to say that it'd be fine.

If he's not scheduled to be in that day they *might* not have enough teachers on staff to cover an extra child. He could be that swing child that requires another teacher on staff which is why they should know beforehand.

I'd take him at the regular time so it'd be like a regular day for him. We have floaters at her center, so drop offs are ok, but I would let them know just in case like Regberdaisy said.

I would let them know, but I don't see any problem with that and I've done it before. We pay regardless of whether he's there, so they should have staff to cover it.

If you are paying for full time, 5 day a week care, you can take him in because you're paying for it! If you're only paying for 9 days out of 10 in a two week period, then that's different.

I would do whatever is least disruptive to him and the class. Meaning dont drop him off in the middle of nap time.

@regberadaisy: Oh, he's scheduled there for Monday-Friday. It's just every other Friday, I don't bring him in. They don't have to adjust teachers or anything - they often forget he's not going to be there.
@blackbird: Yep, we're paying for 5 days a week, even though some weeks we only bring him in for 4, we're still paying for all 5!
Thanks everyone for the input! Sounds like I should drop him off at normal time and then just pick him up early! I guess that probably would the least disruptive, though it means I'll probably have to provide him with a couple bottles and have to pump, booo.

I would let them know but yes I think that it's totally okay! You are paying for fulltime, so techincally they should have his fulltime sport reserved for you!

I would tell them that u only want to bring him for a coupe of hours and ask what the ideal time would be - then schedule your manicure around it.

I do this sometimes on my off days, so I think it's totally fine. You're paying for it in weekly tuition anyway!

@Adira: I don't think there's anything wrong with bringing him in late (vs picking up early) as long as you let them know in advance. I do that with J and they seem ok with it. How old is your LO? Mine is only 6 mo so her room doesn't have structured nap times or anything.

@78h2o: Xander's only 3.5 months, so they don't have a structured nap time either. I picked him up early yesterday and some of the babies were sleeping and some were up and active. So there's no real nap time I have to work around.

I'd ask the daycare what would work for them. Even though he's scheduled for 5 days a week, depending upon the other kids in the room they may have to make adjustments in the number of teachers.

We've often had days when LO only goes for a few hours. I just tell them the day before that she'll be in late/early. We're paying for the day so I don't feel bad at all. I do, however, think it's appropriate to give them some notice the day before.

I work in a daycare/preschool setting. I'd say drop him off like usual and then just pick him up early. I know some daycares like to have their numbers for the day in at a certain time. I know as a teacher it could be a bit disruptive to have a child come in during the middle of the day.

@lilteacherbee: Thanks for the insight! It didn't occur to me that they might change things up for the day if kids aren't in on time and stuff. I'm now definitely leaning towards dropping him off normal time and just picking him up early!

@lilteacherbee: @Adira: my daycare has told me that they don't like late drop-ins for that reason. However, they also said its just a preference, not a policy. Pumping is a drag, but normal drop off time/early pick up is what I'd do.

I would do it!! I would just tell them you are planning on dropping him off at what time and then picking him up early.
@Adira: I am throwing a baby shower in August, 11am on Saturday. So I am going to see about taking Friday off work and if I can, I will take R so I can get the house clean and food shopping done.

I don't see anything wrong with it at all, but I would make a point on Friday to let them know you'll be picking him up early and also discuss their preferences about dropping off late and picking up early in general so you don't feel like you're putting them out in the future.

I worked in a daycare and if there were kids out for the day or sick teachers could go home or would be sent to another room that may have more kids, or we would combine classes of the same age. I would drop off at the same time or let them know.

@googly-eyes: After getting all the input, I WILL be dropping off at the regular time! Seems like that would be the most convenient for daycare, and that just means I can do some extra shopping in the morning before my pedi.
