MIL is visiting two developing countries for several weeks. Do we need to wait before she visits with LO? Should I be concerned that she could be a carrier for diseases we aren't exposed to here? She goes to these countries every year or two so she may already have been exposed and won't show symptoms but could still transmit to others. Or am I just being overly cautious? We don't expect her to visit immediately after returning but we'd rather be safe than sorry. LO is 3 months old.

I'd like to know this answer too! My ILs will be visiting from a developing country when we have a newborn.
In general though, I think it somewhat matters which country you're talking about. My ILs are from S America, and while its considered a developing country, they are from a city that is very similar to NYC.

I'd be a little nervous personally, but that's just based on my own feelings, not fact or science.

@Mrs.Someone: Good point. MIL is going to Southeast Asia to parts that are very impoverished and healthcare is more of a luxury than the standard. I hope we get an answer!

personally it doesn't worry me. FIL came from a developing country for the birth. If you make them wait, I think a week would be sufficent.

@MapleMoose: maybe ask your ped? I would be worried too since your LO is so young and probably hasn't even had her first shots?

@locavore_mama: She's had her first shots but I will call her pedi tomorrow and see what they say. Last appointment they said family events (like holidays) were fine but still be cautious in crowded public places until she's 6 months. I think they tend to be more conservative, which is fine with me!
