I am in the process of becoming a library volunteer. One of the jobs available is to help non-native English speakers write and speak English better. In case the bureaucracy eats up my application I would love to hear some other on-going volunteer ideas.

Maybe something at a hospital...directing patients around the center, assisting with blood drives, and providing blankets or reading materials to patients and their families?

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Do you have any job-related skills that would be useful in volunteer work? The volunteer work I've done where I feel most helpful is when I'm using skills most people don't have. For example, free photo shoots for deserving families; or volunteering in a legal clinic.

I would find an orginization that you feel a pull towards and look for opportunities that way? I found an art program that works to give under priveledged children outlets for their creativity (murals, sculptures, etec). I try to volunteer every other month or so at their fundraisers. Usually doing fun things like serving beer (where a portion of all beer proceeds are given to the organization), teaching a craft, or handing out flyers at festivals to raise awareness of the orginization. Most recently I helped showcase art for a silent auction they were doing, by walking around carrying the pieces up for auction.

@Mae: I'm in sales, but can do office work. My last few volunteer jobs was teaching seniors how to use computer programs and the internet, and another time before that was making calls to donors on behalf of a non profit art/ music organization.
@Littlebit: I like working on events and would be happy doing that kind of stuff. I feel passionate about Planned Parenthood.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: planned parenthood sometimes has a need for escorts, people to accompany patients through protestors so that they don't feel alone.
I started my social work career as a domestic violence / sexual violence help line advocate. I loved it. It requires training and is difficult, but you can usually pick how many "shifts" you cover, and the full time advocates really appreciate the help. They also often have a need for volunteers in shelters, to come help clean/ cook dinner, what ever. My husband and I did a pizza night at a DVD shelter where the kids could help make their own pizzas. It was really fun! -
i worked as a volunteer in the child birth education office of a hospital for a while, i did scheduling, answered people's questions about classes and put together all those folders they give to the dr's offices for expecting patients. i was a volunteer aide for 10hrs/wk in a public school classroom for a year, that was fun, but a lot of work outside of time in the classroom. and DH & i have done some volunteer work at the food pantry at church and for a local charity for young families, but that isn't a regular on going commitment. i really wanted do work with planned parenthood, but the one in my area wasn't accepting anymore volunteers, i should look into it again though! thank you for reminding me of that

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: you can be a cuddler! they ask for people to come in and cuddle babies that are there for extended periods in the nursery. i think it's one of the best volunteer jobs ever!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I hope that opportunity at the library goes through...it is close to my heart because that's how my mom learned English! She went to a program at the library while I played in the childrens department.

I think they have a group that knits hats for the babies though.

@sorrycharlie: hmmm... that's odd. have you applied? they have to run background checks and everything and those spots fill up fast, but usually they need people to come rock withdrawing babies or premies that don't have someone with them. some places are getting rid of the hat programs because hats have come in with pins in them (i think the hats are just with knitters knitting/sewing stuff and one falls in or it was there as a marker and they forgot to remove it), but checking all the hats can be a problem. i love going through the hats though, some of them are just beautiful!

I Needed volunteer hours for something in college and was like oh that would be perfect - but the website for the hosp said something like, lots of people want to volunteer to hold babies but they don't have volunteers do that bla bla
I think they have a group that knits hats for the babies though.
