At night, do/did you wait until your LO was actually crying before feeding, or did you get them up when they started fussing?

When she starts fussing, I feed her.
But her sister's room is right next to ours and I am terrified of her getting woken up, so I tend to baby right away.

I feed her when she starts fussing as long as I gear her at that point. I'm also always nervous about her waking up her brother. It's a lot more difficult to get him back to sleep!

Once he got back to birth weight and was gaining well, we stopped waking him and just wait for him to fuss.

When she was teeny, as soon as she fussed. Once she was over a month I would wait a few minutes to make sure she was actually awake before feeding her. Now at almost five months I wait at least five- ten or for crying.

Depends on how old baby is! When she was teeny it was as soon as she fussed. Around 4 months I'd let her fuss for a bit bc sometimes she'd settle herself. I still do that now (8 months).

I try to get to her as soon as she starts fussing so DH doesn't get woken up. A few times I was too tired to get out of bed quickly and she fell back asleep, so I probably should just wait it out. I also sleep with ear plugs though (am I a horrible mom?) and I wonder to myself how many times she gets up in the night and I don't actually hear her. I just cannot sleep at all if I don't have my plugs in!

I feed as soon as she fusses. I just feel like getting her more worked up makes her harder to get back to sleep.

Now I wait 10 minutes. Back when we were cosleeping he'd stir/fuss and be fed right away. It's easier when all you have to do is roll over instead of actually getting up!

When cosleeping for the first 5.5 months, pretty much right away. After she moved into the crib, we would wake a couple minutes. But she's never been one to wake and party for no reason. If she woke up, she ate and went back to bed.

I always waited for a real cry. When LO was in our room, she did a lot of grunting and noise-making and didn't always wake up. So I waited for the real thing. Now, it depends on how long it's been since her last feed. If it's only been an hour, I wait 3-5 min to see if she'll go back to sleep.

Ditto: @birdofafeather: I nurse when I hear fussing. Waiting would usually lead to full-blown crying and harder to get back to sleep. A few minutes of nursing and she was back out fast.

I get up and feed him right away. He doesn't want to stay awake at night, so when he wakes I know it's because he's hungry.

When it's about that time (which was every three hours back then) I would get up to nurse to avoid a total meltdown. Then it might get hard to get him to settle down. When he got older I had an internal clock to get up at 4am every night to nurse. So weird! It happened with both of my boys.

I can usually tell by the way he sounds if he's going to settle back to sleep after fussing for a few minutes or if he's going to escalate into crying. So I usually wait a few minutes to be sure I don't go in a grab him when he will just put himself back to sleep.

After he was a week old, I stopped waking him up and waited for him to start fussing since he reached his birth weight. When he was about 4 months old, I started to let him cry for a few minutes before getting him as sometimes he would fall back asleep again.

@dojo: ditto!
I can tell if he's just awake and getting comfortable or if he's awake and is going to get even more awake..so I wait it out and see if he'll go back to sleep or not.
