I know there are certain negatives to warm mist humidifiers but we need a new humidifier and although I loved the moisture the cool mist ones provide I hate how unbearably cold they make the room feel. We live in a really cold climate in a really old house so we already have issues with the cold but add moisture to the air and it becomes downright miserable. I was wondering if anyone in similar circumstances has tried the warm mist humidifiers and found them to be more comfortable?

We use warm mist in our room and DD's (although we didn't introduce it to DD's room until this winter, when she was 9 mo - I think there can be risks in newborn rooms with warm mist). I MUCH prefer it to cool mist - makes the room warmer, easier to breathe, and - and this is the big one - most warm mist humidifiers are filter-free. I hate changing the filter and worrying about mold in cool mist humidifiers. The warm mist machines we have are easy to clean and load.

Not to contradict SEPTCA but our warm air humidifier had a filter and that's why we stopped using it - MOLD!
Our cool mist has no filter and I love it!

We have both and neither have filters. The warm one is in my room while the cool one is in DS's room. I do think the cool mist gets a bit chilly so we might put the warm one in his room later on...

@Mamaof2: and @Alivoo01: Yep, both types come with filters or without, I have just found that there is much more selection in warm mist, filter-less humidifiers. I had a much harder time finding a cool mist humidifier without a filter, which is why we initially bought a warm mist. But now I won't go back.
But, yes, filters are DISGUSTING. And expensive.

I grew up using warm mist humidifiers. Without a filter thankfully. The cool mist one in the nursery is offset by the vornado heater we need in his room.

@tillma: We got a cool mist one because we'd heard so much about the warm ones and mold but just like you, we live in a cold climate and it's miserable! Sometimes I think the humidifier and space heater are just canceling each other out!

We also live in a cold climate and use a cool mist. Cool mist is better for colds, coughs, etc. I think there is more potential for mold in the home with a warm mist as well because heat is a breeding ground for mold!

We have the Pure Guardian humidifier that is both warm mist and cool mist. We've had zero mold, though we've only used the cool must setting.
