Three people that I know in real life had long-ish (but normal) labours for their first kid but super fast labours for #2. Is this a pattern?

Yep.
Start to finish 12 hours with DD.
4 hours with DS!

Not. at. all! My labor with P was actually longer than G (of course I had a cesarean with G so no telling how long I would have labored if left on my own).
My MW & I joked b/c she predicted I labor like a 2nd time mom & push like a ftm but it actually was very much the opposite! lol

Both my labors were pretty reasonable. From the time contractions started my labors were...
9.5 hours with #1
5 hours with #2 (would've been faster but the nurse purposely prolonged my labor by not breaking the remainder of my sac - she wanted time to put penicillin in an IV for me)

I was admitted to l&d for 5 days with my first (complicated insurance military vs. civilian hospital) so I couldn't say when active labor with him.
Second was I was induced 8 hours start to finish.
Third I started having contractions at 2am, and was admitted at 12:30. So either 14 hours or 4.5 hours active in the hospital.

Only have the one so far, but it was true for my mom. First one was normal/fast. Her second she barely made it to the hospital, running red lights and everything. My sister was born in the ER, no time to be admitted!

Yup, first was average (but induced), second was 10 days early and I barely made it in time to get my epidural.

Generally, yeah, it's a pretty common pattern, at least for active labor. I was in labor for 26 hours the first time, with 7 hours of hard labor (took all that time to go from 6 cm. to complete), and 25 hours the second time, but hard (active) labor only lasted 2-3 hours. And I went from 6 cm. to having a baby in my arms in 20 minutes that second time, lol. So that part was definitely pretty fast and furious.

I'm terrified of this! DD was a start to finish 4.5 hour labor..and that included a labor ing down the last hr once they let me have an Epi. But I was bearing down after 3 hours!!

24 hours with #1, with pitocin and having my water broke to speed things up. I believe it would have been much much longer without those things. With #2 I was only in labor 14 hours and it was completely natural.

Both involved pitocin and epidurals but the second was significantly shorter than the first!! The first was 24 hours total with 3 hours of pushing, the second was 8 hours total with 15 min of pushing.

1st was 13hrs
2nd was 6 hours
3rd was 4 hours.
All involved pitocin and epidurals

Mine was super fast. First was about 14 hours start to finish. The second? 2.5 hours!

I was induced both times but was at practically the same 3-4cm going in. Start for finish with DD was 8hrs; start to finish with DS was 4 hrs.

It was certainly true for me! With my first my labor was 48 hours and with my second I went from 1 to 7 cm in 2 hours but had to have a c/s anyways because baby was breech.

@Foodnerd81: same for me - I only have one but my mom went into labor the night before she had me (just after noon) but my brother was born within 20 minutes of arriving at the hospital, she said it didn't actually feel like labor until he was right there. I was always scared I wouldn't make it to the hospital because of this!

I have a close friend who had #2 IN THE PARKING LOT of the hospital! Baby wouldn't wait!

@rachiecakes: ha- we hit a detour in our way to the hospital (freaking overnight construction on storrow!!)- if that was my mom on the second she would have had her in the tunnel.

Oh my god I hope so! DD was 28 hours from first contraction to birth. Yikes

i'll report back in a few days..... i hope so too!! LO#1 was only 8 hrs of 'real' labour (the 12 hours before that were so mild i was doing regular things like going to a bbq party etc) -- and he was only born 15 months ago, so i anticipate this one to come like the wind! i hope so! and no tearing... pllleeeasssee no tearing .....

First DD ... Labor was 20 hours...
Second, 6 hours! Super fast, I couldn't believe I was already 9.5 cm at the hospital. Two pushes and she was out. No time for IV or epidural!

I know two STMs who did not make it to the hospital. One had the wherewithal to pull into a fire station on the way. The other gave birth in the passenger seat of her car!
