I went on a four day trip when my son was almost 17 months and we were either feeding one or twice a day. The trip did the weaning. When I came back, he didn't ask for it and I didn't offer. Because I wasn't feeding very much, I did not experience discomfort through this process.

If you are not feeding for long periods and you don't think you have much milk left, you will probably be ok.

@Revel: yeah, the trying to pump was just because i thought i'd be uncomfortable. i had been gone for 24 hours before and been fine, but wasn't sure about 48. turns out, nothing to worry about there! we kept the same 2x a day after that first short trip, but i used the longer trip to wean. i slowly cut down to once a day, then once every other and she was totally fine. our magical last nursing session was 1 minute and she asked for books afterward.

@Revel: i think you just have to say it's all gone and distract with books, other milk, whatever. i had to do that a handful of times, but she would have probably asked more if she were older. she still remembers mama's milk, but she knows it's all gone and not for her. she would joking try to nurse for a couple months afterward, but then say, mama's milk all gone.

@Revel: My LO has been weaned for a few weeks and still talks about nursing and asks occasionally. She is 19 months. When we first weaned, she actually had tantrums to nurse but got over it after two days. But she would still ask and I would just say, "We don't nurse anymore! Blanket? Drink?" We have replaced nursing with snuggling under a blanket and having a drink of milk.

Now, she still will put her hand in my shirt or rub my boobs over my shirt, and she will ask to nurse, but she is a lot more easily distracted and I don't think she even really knows what she would do if I did let her nurse! More and more often she will ask for "banket" before she asks to nurse. I know it's hard! You'll get there. You've done great!

@Revel: @daniellemybelle: yes, I forgot about the hand down my shirt for months after. I can't remember when she stopped doing it, but just hanging onto them was part of comforting her, I think!
