Owwwww! *Insert your own expletive here* Say what you like about nipple shields but they keep your nips in tip top condition. Since baby girl got her chops around my actual nipples I've realised what a whole world of pain breastfeeding can be. It's great she's figured out how to latch on her own though, now we need to make it deeper. It gets better, right? Or I may chop off my boobs for good, lol.

It gets better. I really didn't notice the difference in pain between using it and not using it. It just always hurt. A lot. It gets better, though! Promise!!

@travelgirl1: OH YES! I remember the milk spilling all over her face thing...and then I felt bad for her and the milk on her face, plus losing all that milk made me so sad!!
I think by month 3, my nipples looked like their old selves again. They were some scraggly looking things for a while there!!

it will get better! It took about 2 weeks for the initial pain to wear off (or I just got used to it). But it was so much nicer not having to worry about the nipple shield anymore.

I'm still too scared to wean off the shield. She does so well with it!

@mamajaja: definitely better not to have to bother with the nipple,milk used to leak every freaking where!.
@MamaMoose: A did very well with it but wanted to get rid of it before she gets her harness so we don't have milk leaking on it. I'm so grateful she's figuring it out but wow, the pain!

The pain after we weaned off the nipple shield probably lasted 2-3 weeks and slowly got better. I gladly put up with the physical pain as opposed to the PITA nipple shield.

Do you think she may not be latching properly because she got used to the shape of the nipple shield? I'm working on weaning LO off and my midwife pointed out several things that could make real latching difficult (like the fact that she's just taking the nipple into her mouth, not the nip and areola).
@MusicaV: I'm with you! Grass is always greener, huh? Nothing makes me more frustrated than trying to feed LO at 3 a.m., and she's so impatient she's ripping off the shield with her hands and mouth, and milk is running all over me, and then the damn shield won't stick back on because it's so slobbery, and then I have to get up and wash equipment instead of just slapping her on the breast...gaaaaaah!

It definitely gets better!! When we stopped we stopped cold turkey because of thrush, so I iced my nipples for a minute before she latched
