I know I can look up on The Google what is recommended. I'm wondering what real-life moms have done. I long for the day I can drop a handful of uncut blueberries or grapes on his tray or in a baggie

I stopped cutting blueberries really early. 14/15 months? I still cut grapes at 3.5 and don't plan to stop any time soon. Grapes scare the crap out of me.

DS is almost 23 months. We still cut grapes but stopped cutting blueberries a few months ago.

Most grapes are so big, I will probably cut them forever. But blueberries, I give whole to my 3 year old. They are smaller and mushier. I still cut them for my 11 month old.

My mom always joked as to round foods like grapes, blueberries and hotdog pieces as "baby killers"
So I feel brainwashed and will probably but them until she is 18.....lol

I never cut blueberries. Is that a thing? I stopped cutting grapes recently at 2.25. I was sick of it and my son is good about chewing things. We did BLW though he's always been used to chewing real food.

@jape14: same, although I recently discovered that I've been cutting them wrong so I guess technically so I'm probably not the best person to ask.

@Truth Bombs: @jape14: @brownepiano: Good to know! My LO is 22 months and I still cut blueberries in half but every time I do it I wonder if I still have to. Sometimes I get jumbo blueberries (like seriously HUGE, size of a quarter or nickel) so that makes sense. But the normal sized ones, Ive been wondering for a while if I was being overly cautious.
I agree though, grapes are scarier and I feel less confident in those.

I still cut grapes for my 3.5 year old and will for a long time I think. I never cut blueberries, just squish them slightly for the baby.
honeydew / 7622 posts
I don't cut blueberries for my 16 month old. I will squish them if she has a cold or something. I don't give her grapes yet.
persimmon / 1445 posts
I have never cut blueberries, and I stopped cutting grapes when DD was slightly under 2. I don't let her eat them in the car or if I'm not watching her though- we haven't had a problem so far.

i kept cutting blueberries and grapes until she was old enough to understand that i wanted her to bite them first and not put the whole thing in her mouth. I think it was somewhere after she turned 3

I never cut either. But both are served at the table and DH or I eat with her. I send whole grapes to preschool too.

I will cut grapes forever, until she's like a teenager! They are just perfectly shaped to cut off an airway and accidents happen even if we are watching.
I usually just squish blueberries a bit if they are big.

I never cut blueberries, and stopped cutting grapes at about 10 months. He has no problem biting his grapes.
cantaloupe / 6687 posts
She got all her teeth super early and she's never had trouble biting down and chewing up grapes so we stopped soon after 12 months. We've never cut up blueberries

I don't remember for blueberries. But we still cut grapes and hot dogs at 3.

I stopped cutting blueberries early, but still cut grapes at 3.5 unless I'm sitting with her and making sure she bites them and doesn't put whole grapes in her mouth.

When DD1 entered her 4-year-old preschool class (so at age 3.5), we no longer had to cut up grapes if we brought them in for snack, so that's probably about the time I stopped cutting them up at home. I don't cut up blueberries.

I never cut blueberries. I do cut grapes, he's 14 months. Has anyone used a grape cutter like this?

I'd like DH to be able to help but he only has one good hand.

@macintosh: I literally just used the grape cutter 5 mins ago. It's very convenient. I don't use t every time, but if he's sitting waiting for the grapes because I didn't prep well, it's very quick!

It's been a long time since I've cut a blueberry but I still cut grapes at 3.

@SweetiePie: cool, thanks! I never have time to prep so I literally take the paring knife to the table and cut them one at a time. He loves grapes so this would be handy.
honeydew / 7463 posts
@macintosh: yes! That's usually me too. I sit next to him and cut the grapes, so this is super quick and fun. He loves seeing them pop out in quarters.

We stopped cutting blueberries super early. Around 1. It was closer to 2 when I stopped cutting grapes.

LO is almost 4 and I still cut his grapes most of the time...blueberries I think I stopped cutting or squishing around 18 months?
pomegranate / 3521 posts
We squish blueberries (12m) and we rarely buy grapes. I imagine I will be cutting them for a few years, at least.
pomegranate / 3872 posts
Maybe 3 for grapes unless they're huge and we never cut blueberries. I squished them when she was really little.

DD is almost 3 and we stopped cutting blueberries awhile ago. I still cut grapes and plan to for awhile. Same with cherry tomatoes. After hearing about the toddler who choked on a grape at a Pizza Hut and died, I feel I'll be cutting them for many more years.
hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts
I used to sort of squish blueberries for them. Stopped around 12 months.
I still cut grapes lengthwise for my 4 year old. They are a huge choking hazard. A family friend died choking on a grape at age 5/6.

I squish blueberries (although not so much anymore) and I will most likely cut grapes until she's 40.
cantaloupe / 6791 posts
I squish blueberries for my 11 month old. I still cut grapes for my 2.5 year old (and I probably will for awhile!)
pomelo / 5258 posts
I stopped cutting grapes and grape tomatoes for my 3yo primarily because DH never does. She does well with them and usually bites them before putting them in her mouth. But I'm going to start cutting them again because today DD slipped a whole grape tomato in her 13 mo brothers mouth before I realized what she had done.

My MIL has a patient who has permanent brain damage and lifelong physical limitations from choking on a grape. So, I'm not sure when or if I'll stop cutting grapes. I never did cut blueberries, though.
persimmon / 1322 posts
I've never cut blueberries. My 11 month old also throughly smashes food before she eats it. Grapes I'll probably cut until 2 or 2.5.
pineapple / 12566 posts
I stopped cutting blueberries by the time they were in season in her second year, so maybe 18 months? We don't eat a ton of grapes, but I would still cut them for my 2 yo, but maybe not for my 5 yo.
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
Stopped cutting blueberries around 15-16 months? I had been watching her eat and she chews pretty well so we felt okay not cutting blueberries. Def still cutting grapes!
