At what point does this become an issue? I know most people start around 2, but what is the latest you know of someone getting potty trained?

Ugh I used to babysit a 4 year old who still wore training pants. One time he had a poop accident and it was awful.

My son. 4 years old and we're still working on it. Don't know what I'm doing wrong or what I did wrong, but we can't stop having accidents. Seriously frustrating. But I keep telling myself he'll be potty-trained by the time he goes to college, lol.

@FarmWifeGina: haha aw. you're not alone. Our boys are 5 & 8 and they BOTH still have accidents. Honestly we cannot figure out what it is and we don't have them often enough (every other weekend) to correct the problem. Part of it is that they don't want to stop playing and then it's too late.
Personally, I think by 4 they should be or should be working on it. It's so hard though and every kid is different. Even though I say that, my own step-kids still have accidents so it just really depends.

All kids are so different. DS is 4 and JUST started pooping in the potty. He has been pee trained since he was 3.5 but would still poo in his undies.

@.twist.: It's nice to know I'm not alone! Really, really! Feels like EVERYBODY else's boys were trained well before 4! And he can go, he knows how, he's poop-trained, but he wets pretty much every pair of pants he wears throughout the day and, ugh, I just wish he'd go. I think he gets busy and doesn't want to quit what he's doing too. Now, if I let him run around nakie butt, he'll pee in the potty pretty much every time, but if he has so much as a pair of undies on, he'll just pee in them. Blah.

@FarmWifeGina: Yep. It is so frustrating. I have tried to explain to them that their toys don't move and they'll be there when they get back but it doesn't seem to help sometimes.
We were over at DH's parents house to meet a new baby cousin and the boys and a little girl were upstairs playing. One of our cousins went to check on the and he opened the door and asked what they were doing and our youngest said "WE'RE PEEIN' OUR PANTS". So.Embarrassing.
It seems to have lessened lately, but it usually happens when there are a lot of people. Which is just awesome because then we have to leave the event.

My sister's youngest daughter was 3 in November and they are struggling with it. They have tried everything to get her to do it, but she keeps saying "i'm the baby of the family, baby's wear diapers." They are now bribing her with earrings like her sisters, but only big girls get their ear's pierced. hopefully it works!

@.twist.: Oh no, how EMBARRASSING! I'm a little bit hopeful that starting potty-training with his little sister when she turns 2 this month (basically, introduce her to the potty and see how she does) will help make a connection in his brain that THIS IS WHAT BIG KIDS DO! And little sis is catching up!

I think by the time they start preschool, they should be potty trained. So, 3-4. We lucked out, DS was fully potty trained by 2.5. We started introducing him to the idea at 18 months.

Thats such a hard one because every kid is so different. My daughter was fully trained right after her second birthday, and potty training her was SOOO easy! My twin boys were a different story. Started potty training them around 20 months and they didnt actually get it until they were 3 and we still can not figure out what to do about night time. They still wear pull ups/diapers at night because they pee in them ALL THE TIME! AHHH!!!

this scares me!!!! I hate changing toddlers diapers - it's just so gross to me! I would say if they're not potty trained by 4 there is an issue... and I think that's late. Ideally is before 3 but I know all kids are different and I know kids who weren't potty trained by 3.

A neighbor was just telling me his son wasn't fully potty trained at 5 so they weren't comfortable starting him in kindergarten. Hopefully next year he'll start. He doesn't have any disabilities or anything they just waited till he was over 4 to start trying and by that point it was a strong habit to change.

I have to say preschool age. Really by 3 is ideal, afterwards the idea of still being in diapers is sort of gross to me.

Our school has a requirement of being potty trained for entry at age 3.

My nephew turned 4 last july and wasn't fully potty trained. He got fully potty trained by september. I totally blame laziness with my SIL, there was no reason for him to not be PT earlier.
Our daycare has a requirement of 3 also.
