My DS turned 3 just a couple of months ago. He loves to read. We read a lot of the regular books that I assume most toddlers/preschoolers love to read, but I am looking forward to picking up a book and reading a chapter together every night. What age did you or someone you know start reading these books together? Any recommendations for chapter books for younger kids?

Maybe not so much chapter books but a series so he can get familiar with characters and such! Frog and Toad, Authur, Biscuit.....

I don't have any suggestions, but I would start at any time if your LO is willing to sit and listen. Our eldest is an avid reader and he's well past his age level in novels, so I don't really have any advice on age appropriate books (and our middle son isn't really into reading so that's a struggle with finding the right one).

We started with Magic School Bus at age 5 - there are still pictures in the book to grab their attention (which my kids prefer)

I would agree with taking cues from your child--whenever they are interested and can sit still long enough to listen to a whole chapter (or however much you read).
I also wouldn't push it if it seems there isn't a lot of interest. So many parents and teachers get so hung up on the "right" type of books to read, when the important thing is just reading, period. It doesn't matter if a kid is reading an article about frogs, a chapter book about a family of girls whose dad is away at a war, or a comic book with words--they will become literate reading any one of those, as long as they enjoy it and want to keep reading.

We did some Phineas and ferb chapter books about a year ago. He's really into Star Wars now at almost 4 so we have the Jedi academy book which is kinda a chapter book.

@shellio: I think if you're encouraging reading, you're doing it right. The content doesn't matter as long as they always find it enjoyable and not a chore.

We read chapter books at bed sometimes! The secret is finding one your LO is interested in. I'm currently almost through the My Father's Dragon trilogy with my DD who will be 3 in April. It's a great, easy-to-follow story!

We started with Ellie when she was 4. I say give it a try--you'll know if he's not ready yet. Lorelei will sometimes listen to chapters of Ellie's books (she's almost 3) but doesn't really care most of the time. And she still likes less text/more pictures for the most part, though she doesn't mind stuff that's text-heavy if it's true information about animals or dinosaurs.

DS (almost 2.5) really likes the Dodsworth series (Dodsworth in New York is the first one, and then there's Dodsworth in Paris, London and Rome) - they have short chapters and pictures on each page. I think they're fun to read too.
