I'd like to say she won't need one until she's driving but I'm told I'll probably change my mind at some point on that. What age will you allow your LO to get a cell phone? Will you make them pay for their own plan or pay it for them?

They will NEVER have one! Just kidding. They will get one when I deem it to be necessary - high school? And they will have to pay for their own phone and plan (or, at least contribute).

I think we'll probably end up getting her the kind where she can only call us and her grandparents, and 911 when she's younger. Just in case of an emergency.

I have no idea. Maybe when they're 12? 10? Will make them do chores around the house for it? haha. Haven't thought that far ahead!

I will get them one when I decide it convenient for ME. Once they start getting involved in after school activities and such I think it will be easier to coordinate pick up and that sort of stuff if they have a phone. But it will be a privledge. I won't make them pay for it but I will make them help around the house to earn all of these things we give them. And I will take that phone away in a second if you are acting up or abusing the privledge. I'm going to be such a nice mom : )

I'm thinking middle school due to school activities, sports, and what not similar to what @MamaMoose said. And yes, it will be a privilege to have a phone, not a requirement!

I got mine when I was 16 and had a car, so I'm thinking that might be suitable for my kids, though I may change my mind. Also, the phones we were given were for EMERGENCIES only. Although they were proper phones and we could've used them, my parents were very clear that we were only allowed to use them for emergencies and should, in general, keep the phone off at all times, unless we were going somewhere and they wanted it on so they could call us.
I like the idea of the phones that can only call like 5 numbers, especially for kids that are younger.
I think it'll depend on what plan Hubs and I have. If we already have a family plan (which we do) and it's only an extra $10 for another phone, we may get them a phone and just pay the $10 ourselves. But that wouldn't come with texting/data, so if they wanted that, they'd have to pay for it themselves.

I'm hoping for sometime in Junior High and only for emergencies and for me to contact THEM. If they want to chat on the phone with the friends, they can use our home phone!

I think I will get the LO one once she starts going out with her friends more or something and I am not around. I think we will all get our LOs phones at an earlier age than we think. This is just my hunch but the world is a-changing.

When he can pay for it. We will have a family cell phone, but not to be used for texting, etc.

Hopefully not until they start driving. I don't really see a reason to need one before that.

I am old, so I didn't get my first one until I started working 15 years ago. I am not sure, we'll see what the trends are and who knows, technology in 10 years is going to be so different anyway!
