It's soooooo hot here, but I'd like to start getting out of the house more. The only things I can think of doing are walking around stores, and I don't need to spend more money. I'd love to go to library story hour, but that's LO's nap time. And things like the aquarium and zoo cost more than I'd like to spend, especially since LO is really still too young to appreciate it.

Do you have a public pool? My LOs love splashing around in the water. Also we have a park here that has water features (almost like sprinklers but more permanent).
Once a month there are usually free days at the museums and zoos. (Usually a Tuesday or Thursday).
Are there other library story hours? Our town has one almost every day and all are at different times.
Do you have a local university? Ours has galleries and other interesting things to see when you wander.

Your LO is probably still too young to enjoy a lot of things so I would probably just do more craft activities at home. I think you'll have a lot more options once she starts walking!

@mrsjyw: She's not quite there yet. We do arts and crafts sometimes, but she really has no idea what she's doing.
@Mrs. Jacks: My mom has a pool. Good idea, we should go there more often. And there's a park with water features we can go to. I'll have to look up the free days for museums. Thanks for all of the ideas!

not sure how old your LO is but:
finger painting with pudding.
the bathtub can be your best friend! fishing poles, nets, measuring cups, watering cans all make for fun. you can also do messy crafts in the tub (colored shaving cream is fun!)
walking around pet store to see the animals is free & fun!

@mrs. bird: LO is 9 1/2 months. She loves the bath so she'll love those things. We do a lot of pet store walking because we hate leaving our pup at home and that's someplace that he's allowed to be.

Do you have any free museums nearby? There are some museums downtown here that are free admission (they just ask for a donation that isn't mandatory). You could stroll around some museums for hours...

@mediagirl: No free museums that I know of. Plus I worry about LO being too loud in museums.

@artbee: My SIL brings her kids to that once and awhile. I know a lot of them often have a Starbucks inside of them too

@artbee: hmmm..bummer. We have a couple here that are geared towards kids so if they're loud, they don't mind. It's really kind of cool!
Storytimes sound like a great idea. Libraries and Barnes and Nobles are great for that. Haha and yeah, Starbucks.

Stars & Strollers? I loved going to the afternoon shows for moms and babies at the movies. I wish I could go again, but my LO would have a fit. He's too old now, at 15 months.

Often memberships to places like aquariums, science centers etc. cost about 2.5 times the cost of admission and usually include other perks like free parking and other discounts so if you have a good place nearby it might be worth it. Our science center had areas that would appeal even to a baby and there are always other people around to chat with.
It could be a good first birthday present to your LO too!
Check the schedules for special events at odd places too- arboretums, state parks, community centers and so forth often do events regularly for little ones that may be held inside and would give you something to look forward to.
