@MamaMoose: mmmm so jealous. Be my friend!!! Haha
Are there different varieties that most places just lump into a generic "baklava" category?
And oh I don't know if this is a NYC thing but I love Japanese bakery takes on Italian desserts! There's this place in the village that makes an awesome tiramisu!

Japanese tofu cheesecake

I'm sure there's much more, but I can't think of them right now.

I'm a sweets fan so I don't discriminate any except for cheesecake or anything with cream cheese in it.
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
@caffeinated: @NYCaliMama: what makes them different from egg custard tarts found in Chinese bakeries? Looks a little different but sounds the same.
And ensaymada looks so good!

@regberadaisy: The crust is different (it's a bit chewy/flaky) and the tops are a bit caramelized. Mmmm...
grapefruit / 4049 posts
@betsyboop: I think Indian rice pudding is called kheer... I love it too. I've had rasmalai before too... the dessert with balls made of cheese/cream and usually very sweet!

@regberadaisy: I love Chinese egg custard tarts and grew up eating them! But yeah the Portuguese kind, which I discovered last year, are sooo good too. The tops are more sweet/carmelized... And the pastry cup is more flaky.... just like the pp described. Oh and the inside is more fluffy.
In NYC, check them out at Choco Bolo. They are called Pastel de Nata. Best thing on the menu there, even though their specialty is chocolate cake.

I keep reading the thread title and getting excited because I love ethnic foods.... I just don't eat dessert.

@NYCaliMama: Oops, I've been calling it rasmalai for years! So ignorant! Is rasmalai the balls in super sweet syrup?
bananas / 9227 posts
@caffeinated: It's a Filipino dessert of shaved ice, milk and candied what-not's in it, topped with ice cream and a piece of flan and crispy rice for crunch. Halo-halo literally means "mix, mix" in Tagalog. It's what you do before you eat it
The purple stuff is a purple yam flavored ice cream, but you usually get to pick which flavor you want.

@regberadaisy: first of all....We are totally friends!! Secondly, yes different regions of Greece and different families use varying nut and spice combinations but normally it's dripping in so much honey that most taste the same : )

@caffeinated: @NYCaliMama: mmmm that sounds delish. Where is Choco Bolo? Must remember for February!
@MamaMoose: yay! So send me some homemade baklava! Hahha jk
@Mrs. Lantern: omg how can I forget about chendol?! Love it. Get it every single time we go for Malaysian, sans green peas!
@betsyboop: hm I don't think so. I haven't been there in years so who knows if it's still open. It's a teeny tiny shop on a side street.

I love trying new foods and consider myself an adventurous eater, but haven't had many of these desserts (and I loooove sweets), especially the Asian ones - maybe because I'm always too full from dinner to order dessert when we go out to eat?
I've got to work on this! Man, what an awful mission to undertake.
I do love crepes, baklava, creme brûlée, and cannoli's!
