I'm reading a book called Hopeless right now, it's pretty good...just need to commit more time to finishing it. My reading challenge for the year is off to a slow start.
What are you reading? What's on your to read list?

I just finished "My Sister Lives on the Mantelpiece" (omg depressing) and I'm about 1/3 of the way through "Life after Life" (so freaking weird and sort of depressing but I want to see how it ends).
Not sure what is next… something light!

"Holy Sh*t" (nonfiction about the etymology of obscene language and cursing-- awesome read!), "My Notorious Life" (fiction-- good read, but parts were very sad), and "Cotton" (nonfiction about... cotton).

@Mae: I LOVED my sister lives .... have you read Ketchup Clouds?
Life after Life is weird. It's like the author went - OH! I know how to get out of writing half a story! I can just literally repeat everything and add three pages and OH MY GOD I AM GENIUS.

I'm reading Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. I am a few years behind with this one, but so far, I'm loving it!

@Bao: I just signed up for Goodreads so I can track how many books I read in 2014. I feel like I'm reading so much less than I used to!

@IRunForFun: ooooh, username?
@Bao: I gave it three stars on goodreads and that's only because I round up from half stars.

I read a lot of magazines! they are my me time/relax time - I get glamour, cosmo, lucky and the like. I haven't read a chapter book in awhile!

@sera_87: I have not, but if you liked My Sister Lives on the Mantelpiece and are recommending it… I might pass lol. It was well written but I don't like books that tear my heart out like that!
@Bao: YES. And its really long. I feel like I've been reading it foreverrrr already and I'm only 1/3 through (I took a break to read My Sister Lives, and finished that in 24 hrs, so I'm a fast reader generally!). But I'm still curious what the point of all this is going to be so I'm going to power through.
@IRunForFun: I read that a few weeks ago

@IRunForFun: I joined in on the Goodreads 2014 challenge and put my goal at 22 books and I'm still trying to finish the first one! Not off to a good start for me

I just started The Rosie Project today. This past week I read a Veronica Rossi trilogy:
Under the Never Sky, Through the Ever Night and Into the Still Blue. They were pretty decent.
@sera-87: I really like Maggie Stiefvater's books. I just read the Raven books and am anxiously awaiting the next one. The Scorpio Races is still my favorite book by her.
@bao: I liked Life After Life. It was repetitive in the beginning but I found it pretty addictive.

@Mae: its quite different from My Sister Lives. I liked it a lot more (4 stars v. 3 stars) - its more suspenseful since she's writing to a man on death row and reveals just a bit at a time. Its also a bit less depressing!

@Mae: re: MSLOTM - depressing good, or just depressing? LAL is on my to-read list, you'll have to let me know how it turns out!
@meredithNYC: how is it? I've got it on my bookshelf ready for me
@sera_87: what's Scorpio races about?
I just finished The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry and really liked it, although I seem to be the only one who did. Last night I started Dark Places by Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl) on the recommendation of another bee the last time one of these threads came up.

@NurseMommy: If you ever like depressing books, then probably depressing good. I mean it was a compelling read and very well written and a very moving story. But still, I ended up sobbing on my couch trying to finish it without ruining the library book. And I just don't generally like to let fictional characters take that sort of emotional toll on me lol.

I just finished The Fault in Our Stars and The Outliers this week. Haven't started anything new, but my SIL bought me A Casual Vacancy recently and I need to read it. I just get really lazy about picking them up if they aren't on my Kindle.

@NurseMommy: the supernatural element is kelpies. It's about family and belonging and traditions and love and oh. It's just SO good. Beautifully, beautifully written.

@Mae: I love depressing books sometimes. Ok, often. Thanks!
@sera_87: is it a sequel to anything?
pomegranate / 3604 posts
@NurseMommy: surprisingly, no. I think it may be Maggie's only book that's a stand-alone.

I'm currently reading The Financial Lives of the Poets. I haven't gotten too far yet, so I haven't decided if I like it. My husband just finished it and enjoyed it. I do like the author, I read Beautiful Ruins by him last year and liked it.

I don't know what to read next!

@NurseMommy: I'm about 1/2 way through and so far, so good. At this point I would consider it fairly "light" reading - not quite chick-lit, but not quite heavyweight literary, you know? Somewhere in between. However, all of the reviews mention how sad it is, so I'm bracing myself

@Running Elley: Lies You Wanted to Hear, Sea of Tranquility (those are the two I read after the books you just read! :P)
