My mom had "Defending Jacob" by William Landay overnighted to me before this trip because she read it and loved it so much that I just HAD to bring it. I haven't started it yet but we generally have similar book tastes.

I read "A Hundred Summers" while on vacation. Super cute beachy read.
I'm getting realllly excited for some books coming out in the next few months though: Allegiant (the third in the Divergent series), Dream Thieves (sequel to the Raven Boys), and the Bitter Kingdom (third book in the Fire and Thorns trilogy).

@FutureMrsMcK: I want to read that!!
I started "Bicoastal Babe" by Cynthia Langston - it was a free eBook on Amazon at one point. It's your typical chick lit type book and mindless reading but sometimes we need that

I just started reading "The View from Penthouse B" by Elinor Lipman. It was an impulse grab at the library, but so far I like it!

Just finished The Visible Man by Chuck Klosterman today. Definitely recommend!!

I'm lately obsessed with Lionel Shriver. I started with 'We Need to Talk About Kevin', which is utterly gripping. Then I read her latest book, 'Big Brother', which was just as compelling without the violence and really tragic ending. I'm going back and reading some of her earlier stuff now, which is interesting. I really like everything I've read so far.

About to start amity & sorrow.

I'm reading The Tao of Martha by Jen Lancaster. She vowed to try and emulate all things Martha for a year -it's a fun read.

@FutureMrsMcK: My book club read that and we all enjoyed it!
I've been slowly making my way through a biography of Queen Victoria for several months. It's good, but you can't read very much at a time because it is so dense. I also set aside a book that was a huge letdown and was too lazy to go to the lib and too cheap to buy something else so I started rereading Harry Potter from book 1. I'm going to have to switch gears soon and read my book club book- the Madman's Daughter.

I started 11/22/63 a couple months ago and stopped due to a book club book I needed to read. I just started it again a week ago so currently reading it.

@sarac: Have you read the Post Birthday World? I loved it. I've been thinking about reading We Need to Talk About Kevin. I need to get on that.

@sarac: I loooooooooooved "We Need to Talk About Kevin" but I read some not so great reviews about her other books so I'm really interested to hear that you're liking "Big Brother" and it makes me want to try to give it a shot after all

@FutureMrsMcK: a friend just loaned me Defending Jacob. I have a few other books I was planning to read first like Gone Girl and Wild. It's great to hear your mom loved the book so much, I might have to bump it up to top of my list!
@sarac: I loved We Need to talk About Kevin and I have a couple of her other books sitting around my house that I've yet to read. I loaned "So Much for That" to a friend and she really liked that one.

As soon as I get some free time I'm going to start "The Eye of God", the latest in the Sigma series by James Rollins.

@sarac: @MrsKoala: Have either of you read The Female of the Species? I read We Need to Talk About Kevin a few years ago and looooved it, so I read The Female of the Species and really didn't care for it. I didn't bother with any of her other books but maybe that one was just a fluke?

@delight: IMO Gone girl wasn't worth the hype and Wild is fairly good. I'd go with that one first.

I am starting Divergent soon and I would recommend Case Histories by Kate Atkinson.

Just finished The Fault in Our Stars. It was beautiful but I sobbed reading it. Halfway through World War Z, I really like it but I'm struggling for some reason.

I'm actually reading a book my cousin wrote right now, but I just finished the last Percy Jackson (I'm a sucker for YA fiction). We went on a long road trip too and listened to audiobooks: Dad is Fat, Lets Pretend this Never Happened, & The Drunkards Walk (the last one was pretty boring).

I only read non fiction these days. I am working on two books right now:
American Nations: A History of the Eleven Rival Regional Cultures by Colin Woodward
The Pursuit of Italy: A History of a Land, Its Regions, and Their Peoples by David Gilmore

I loved Defending Jacob, but I was so mad I had no one to talk about it with at first.
The Kitchen House was amazing. I love Civil war era historical fiction. Blue Aslyum was really good too.

@Running Elley: @MrsKoala @IRunForFun I am JUST now reading The Post Birthday World, and so far I really like it. I loved We Need to Talk About Kevin, and Big Brother. So then I went to read The Female of the Species, and yeah, it's weird and not nearly as good. My edition of the book had an essay from the author about how it was her first book, and that she's glad to have evolved in her writing ability since then. She was pretty clearly saying 'this book is good, but it gets way better', which seems to be the case. I'm eager to go read all of her stuff to see the entire arc of her talent.
As an aside, I see the criticism of Big Brother. It was based on her real life experience with an obese brother who died, so I tried to excuse her feelings. But there is some really ugly sentiment about overweight people. I'd personally suggest avoiding it to anyone who would take that personally.

@sarac: @MrsKoala: @IRunForFun: @Running Elley: It makes me so happy to see the Lionel love! I am kind of obsessed and also recently read "Big Brother". I agree with @sarac that she's pretty harsh about people who are overweight/obese. Which, if you have read any recent interviews with her, you will see that weight is definitely an issue with her. She's a total weirdo, but I kind of dig it. For some reason I prefer my authors to be a little eccentric, you know? Anyway, here's a recent Elle interview:

And now I'm thinking I have posted this before, perhaps? Oh, well... gotta share the Lionel love when I get the chance.

@IRunForFun: Oh and as far as not loving her early stuff, I definitely agree. I rank the ones I have read like this:
We Need to Talk About Kevin
Post Birthday World
Big Brother
So Much For That
Double Fault

I just finished reading Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan... I enjoyed it so much that I'm re-reading it again! It's s fictional tale about billionaires in Singapore and super entertaining. It also inspired me to start planning a trip to Singapore! Hoping to go later this year.

@rsp213: Divergent was great. I really want to read the other two now, but have too many other books laying around to buy more.
Anybody want to loan me Insurgent? I'll pay you back the postage.
