We had Airedales growing up and they are amazing family dogs. They are super, super loyal, great with kids, and very protective of their family/home. Neither one we had barked often – just when someone came to the door, etc. They are also really smart; which on the down side means they are often hard to train and you need to be a strong figure with them. They do barely shed though. Here's some google photos of Airedales...

This is my English bulldog, Phyllis, dressed up in her Halloween whale costume. I love English bulldogs but they tend to have a lot of health issues and shed a lot. Also, I find that they're the kind of dog you either love or hate. I find their slobbery, snoring ways amusing, but I can see why others get grossed out.

We have an American Eskimo and he sheds ALL the time. It's impossible to keep up with all the shedding. Plus twice a year he blows his coat, so it's chunks of fur that come out. But he's the sweetest and smartest dog I've ever known!

We have a (we think) shar-pei, rottie, shepherd mix. None of these breeds would have necessarily been my first choice, but our pup is a great girl. She's a big teddy bear, loves people, loves our cats. Is so respectful of our baby, but she never barks (which drives DH crazy) and she sheds like CRAZY.
@ladyfingers: I was quickly scrolling through and immediately thought, Shar-pei when I saw your pup! We have a shar-pei mix too and she has the same funny little ears!

We have a german shepherd and we love her! She does shed somewhat normally, with 2 pretty bad periods a year when her coat changes. But she's also a long haired shepherd. We had a short haired german shepherd when I was in highschool and he didn't shed near as much. She barks but only when someone knocks on the door or something is out of the ordinary. I don't mind though, because it intimidates people and makes me feel safer. There was a string of break-ins going on in our neighborhood for a month or so where the guy would just walk in your house anytime of day whether you were home or not, and our back door opened one night while we were in the bedroom, she freaked out barking and charged the door, and the guy took off. We heard him run off and jump our chain link fence. Scary! She is a very loyal dog, like most of her breed and is super smart and easy to train. She's wonderful and protective of LO, and is a great family dog. They can be high energy though if you don't have the time to give them some good exercise everyday, and they need space to run outside and burn their energy.

I have a mix. We think he's part German Shepherd, part Golden. But really we have no clue what's all in there.

@Rachel: omg! I've never been a fan of pugs but that first pic may have just changed my mind! That is one of cutest puppies ever!

We have a 1 year old female Golden Retriever. She sheds about as much as any dog (our domestic short hair cats are probably worse shedders than her) with a double coat. She's only started barking like an idiot in the last couple of months because DH's friends' dog is a bad influence on her (yappy little Jack Russell), so now she freaks out if she hears kids outside or if she sees old people. She REALLY does not enjoy elderly people.
Pros of the breed are that they are very smart (she picks up stuff really easily) and they generally love kids and being in a big and busy family setting. Also, being a retriever she's a great swimmer and because she likes water she's always happy to have a shower with DH. Cons are that retrievers generally stay excitable and wacky until they are two or three years old and they have the potential for a lot of expensive health problems (cancer, hips, eyes).
Overall, we love her fuzzy face

Welsh terrier! Like my avatar
They're basically a smaller version of an Airedale, so the same temperment, like yoursilverlining explained above!

@yoursilverlining: love Airedales do much!!! We went with a welsh just for size reasons

@jennylynn: oh my gosh what a cute (though scary) story!! I've actually been leaning a bit towards German Shepherds; they seem like such great dogs.

@meredithNYC: I just have to say that I love that (a) you have an English bulldog named Phyllis and (b) Phyllis has a shark constume. I don't get people who don't love bulldogs, they're hilarious!

We just lost our Samoyed, Frankie, this winter. She was 14 and the best dog ever. So sweet and funny, and wonderful with kids. They love the cold, so she wasn't too happy in the summer (in winter she'd stay outside all day), and they do have a tendency to bark when happy/excited and they shed a LOT. But they are just the friendliest and sweetest!

We have a mutt - I think he is a redbone coon hound / lab mix. We didn't get him for his temperament, shedding, or anything like that... he was a cute puppy and I had furbaby fever! We ADORE him. He is not the cuddliest which makes me a little sad but we love his funny little personality. He is the perfect dog for us. I think dogs adapt to their owners' personalities and lifestyles - it's been true for us. I honestly would never get a dog from a breeder now because we've had such a great experience with our rescue puppy.

We have a Maltese/Pomeranian mix and a Puggle. They are definitely our little furbabies.
Maltese/Pom
Pros: doesn't shed, super affectionate and cuddly, low maintenance
Cons: nothing really. She just doesn't know how to play "quietly" with her brother. She always barks when they are chasing each other
Puggle
Pros: Good running buddy, very loyal, can learn tricks easily because he is food motivated
Cons: sheds and their breed is super hyper/active in the first 3 years. I'm told they calm down. He just turned 2 this summer so I'm still waiting

We have a rhodesian ridgeback mix and a great dane.
Ridgeback
Pros: Super smart, easy to train, don't shed much
Cons: Large, tend to have anxiety issues, stubborn
Great Dane
Pros: Super laid back, very friendly, doesn't really bark, doesn't really require a lot of exercise.
Cons: Sheds pretty bad at the change of seasons, doesn't know it's own size.

These dogs are all sooo cute!!
We loooove our greyhound, Gia! She's very shy and not good with other people, which is a downside. But she is so adorable and playful with us at home!
Greyhounds are the only breed for us

my pup is a pekepoo-pom (his dad was a pekingese-poodle, his mom a pomeranian). because he's part poodle, he really doesn't shed. his hair grows fast pretty fast, but if we keep him groomed, he doesn't shed or mat. he is the BEST dog who ever lived. he is so, so friendly, happy, spunky, and smart. he's only 10 pounds, so he's a great little cuddler. he's the perfect size and energy level for kids too, which i love. i'm definitely a big fan of mutts!

II thought you hated animals! You're warming up? That's my girl!
We have a shiba inu. He barks. He sheds. He jumps. He runs away. He chews. He is disobedient. He is pretty much a total douche bag of a dog but we love him so much. He plays super we'll with other dogs and he loves us and our little one to death.

We have boxers and they are big loveable oafs. I love them to bits, but they are sheddy, drooly and jumpy. They are amazing with LO, but I doubt we'll ever get shedding dogs agian.

We have a chihuahua and a lab mix. The chihuahua isn't very friendly with strangers. She doesn't bark, but she is scared of them. With us and our immediate family she is really friendly and loveable. She loves to cuddle which I love! Our big dog is goofy and very playful. He is hard for me to walk because he only listens to my husband! That can be frustrating.

We have a Newfoundland dog - 140 pound of pure snuggly love! He is super calm and mellow! Sawyer already LOVES him! They do shed like crazy, and drool, but you totally get used to it, though it adds a lot of vacuuming to my life!

We have two. A malamute x kelpie ( the black one) she's an amazing dog- the most loyal dog to us, very smart, is amazing with children ( they could be poking her eyes out and she would just take it) she just really loves humans... So much so that she can be a bit defensive about protecting. She does shed a lot though. As much as I love her and love fluffy dogs - I don't think I'd get another fluffy dog due to the amount they shed.
The other is a malamute x German shepherd. Again sheds a lot! But he is the biggest snugglepie ever. He would quite happily snuggle all day. He loves to play though too! He is very athletic too!

Love this thread! just skimmed thru the pics but can't wait to go back and read all about all these babies' personalities.
Here are my two furbabies. We have a 7 year old Pomeranian named Dory and a 4 year old Chihuahua mix named Remy. They're both a little skittish but we are extremely strict with them and we've never had any problems with them with the kids.
We got Dory from a breeder and she's purebred, but she lost her fur a couple of years ago. After finally accepting that she was balding (the same disease that humans get, Alopecia X) her fur started growing back this year and she's got a full coat again, yay!
We adopted Remy from a woman who had rescued two Chihuahuas who had a litter of puppies. He was the only long haired one of the bunch and ended up looking NOTHING like a Chihuahua. We think he's got some Corgi and maybe some Cavalier King Charles Spaniel in him.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: I am!! I don't know what happened... before I got pregnant my sister got a chipoo and that started it for me - she's so cute.. Then once I was pg I was okay not having a pup and now I want one again haha. I told DH we have to wait until DS is older but I want one now... like I said - it's impossible given our living situation so I guess that's a good thing?? dealing with a baby and a pup would probably be a lot of work!

We have a shih tzu. He does not shed and is the sweetest dog. We always feel bad that we don't spend as much time with him after the kids. But he's never ever snapped at the kids before even though my son can be rougher with him sometimes. He loves hanging out under their chairs for droppings.

We have a sheltie! He's easily the size of a collie. He barks a lot but is very sweet and definitely struggling with the lesser amount of attention since the baby came home.
Noticing the baby for the first time:

We have two Boston Terriers. They aren't great with kids. Whenever a kid screams or runs or makes a noise, they want to chase after him or her. They've been good with the baby so far - just sniffing her and ignoring her. I'm curious how things will play out as she gets older.
They were both rescues - one was from the SPCA and the other was from Boston Terrier Rescue of NC. We're not sure of their ages but Clover is around 10 years old and Thumper is about 6.

We have an awesome Shih tzu. We shave her down every 6-8 weeks to make everyday grooming much easier.

We have a male jack russell terrier. He sheds, but his hair is short. As a baby, he was super hyper, but when he turned 2, he totally mellowed out and became more of a lap dog. He's a crazy fast runner, and tends to make a run for the world if you let him outside without a leash. He only barks when he hears a mysterious noise or if the door bell rings.
We also had a yellow lab that was HUGE by the time he was 17 weeks old (30+lbs), and sheds long hair like crazy!! He's well mannered and loves the water/go swimming.
We also had a pomeranian/yorkie mix dog. She was fluffy and had long hair like a pomeranian and did NOT shed!!! Woohoo!! She was smart and never traveled outside our yard without a leash, but potty training was a nightware!!!
nectarine / 2152 posts
We rescued what we believe to be a Boston Terrier/Jack Russell mix (although other guesses include Chihuahua, King Charles Cavalier and Beagle) but she is 13 pounds, crazy smart and mostly a little a$$hole but I love her sooooooo much.
She barks (a lot). She sheds (not a ton but a decent amount). She doesn't really like other dogs. She hogs the bed. She's stubborn and 'spirited'. But she is my baby, we got her when she was eight weeks old and she is the cutest thing ever!!
