Our dog is pretty much a mutt but he is half cocker spaniel and half mini-golden doodle. He is the perfect size for us (35 lbs) and he has a wonderful playful nature although he still very much acts like a puppy at 3 years old. He loves playing catch, swimming and zipping around parks. He is great to run with (DH has ran 10+ miles with him) and he was easy for me to train. He doesn't really shed and he used to be really good about barking until we left him with DH's parents and their bichons (who bark all the freaking time). Here's a recent pic of him. When he was a puppy he was more of an apricot colour.

I know you won't want one, because you said your prerequisite was not shedding, but I have a pug! He doesn't shed too bad, but he does shed.

Pugs are really low maintenance (don't need a lot of exercise, love to cuddle) and they're fantastic with babies/kids. Plus they're so full of personality!

We will probably not have any other breed other than a Golden Retriever ever. Everything about them screams our personalities, lifestyle and adaptability to just about anything! I know that can probably said for many people and their chosen breed of dog, but he definitely fits the bill for us! When we're busy and on the go, he's with us, when we're lazy and snuggled on the couch, he's lazy! He's loyal, polite, trainable, and cute as heck, sheds like crazy, but a no big deal trade off! He wouldn't bark if you paid him, except the odd growl at the front door if someone unfamiliar comes by and knocks/rings door bell. Cons? Health problems with such a popular breed, breeder research is key, but rescue is a very doable option for the breed as well.

I have two Japanese Chins. They're teeny, tiny - about cat sized - and so lovable. They don't need much exercise, just a little walk per day, and don't bark much at all. They do, however, shed like crazy! I have to hoover my sofas daily and, despite the regular hoovering, I often spot tumbleweeds of fluff rolling across my wood floors!!

So, here they are! My babies!!

We have an 18 pound mix. Would you believe she's mostly German Shepherd? Some Jack Russell and various other breeds thrown in too.

I have a Siberian Husky. (female, 1 year 2 months old)

Cons: She sheds a lot lately. She has crazy separation anxiety. She is very possessive over DH and barks if I hug him, she started digging recently, both yard and carpet & verry stubborn.

Pros: She is great with kids, so far (DH's niece beats the sh*t out of her and she doesn't even blink), she is so so snuggly, she is a quick learner, knows lots of tricks, she is gentle and playful. She can run fast.

I wouldn't get one if you have short patience, she really trys my nerves sometimes. Okay, most of the time.

Summary: I wouldn't buy another one but I love mine, if that makes sense.

@Coco Bee - Kenzie is wonderful with the baby - we got her 2 weeks before I got pregnant, so she is still young, but we tried to "prepare her" by pulling on her fur and hair so that now when Colin pesters her, she doesn't get upset - she's really easy going, albeit pretty high energy. Doodles are wonderful with kids.

Black goldendoodle - no shedding, such a sweet dog. Love him and M loooooves to crawl all over him and pull on his fur. Feeney does nothing.

I am a cat person, but DH & I both have puppy fever! Our building doesn't allow dogs, so that keeps us in check I really want a French bulldog, they seem perfect for us! Someday

We have a shar-pei mix, she was a shelter dog. We're not sure what she's mixed with but our best guess is boxer or lab.

She is WONDERFUL. I highly recommend shelter dogs if you know they are good with kids (many of them do know that history). They are loving and gently and are just so happy to be with you.

She rarely barks, only if there's somebody coming up to the house or if she hears our neighbor's dogs bark "warning" barks. She sheds, but it's just little red hairs so it's not awful. She is protective but gently and great with kids.

The only cons I'm aware of is her breed is prone to hip dysplasia and she does have short ear canals so they need to be cleaned frequently. She's also a bed hog, but I don't think that's breed-specific

As for goldens, I believe there is a breed that doesn't shed as much. Not sure which kind -- red golden retriever, possibly? I know goldendoodles also don't shed as much.

@Rachel: we have pugs also! ours are fawn. they do shed quite a bit (the fawn more so than the black because of their double coats), but they are perfect low-maintenance apartment dogs for us. they don't need a ton of exercise and small enough for apartments, and also for travel!

ACK I love our mutt. We adopted him but he is a shih tzu mix. Was definitely abused & probably from a puppy mill, but after he got comfortable with us he is such a big part of our family!

Pros: Great apartment dog. Love to walk but doesn't freak out if he doesn't get exercised. Great with kids. Not "yippy". Doesn't really shed. Playful but also snuggly.

Cons: High maintenance on his hair (we do it ourselves but its still a pain), chronic eye problems, super sensitive stomach, fussy eater.

I'm extremely pro-adoption - and volunteering at two shelters, even if you decide one breed that you're looking for you'll probably be able to find one if you're patient! A few months ago they had purebred Great Pyrenees puppies in.. OMG fluff!

Can't imagine not growing up without a dog myself, can't wait for our baby to bond with him

Love this thread! We have two maltese girls. We have had a total of 3 and are convinced they are the best dogs. Sweet temperament, rarely bark, love to cuddle and play, and no shedding! They do require grooming every so often but that is it. We love our girls to pieces! I don't know how to post a photo from my iPhone. Help?

There are some really cute Hellobee dogs! I have an Aussie and an Aussie/Border Collie little monster. They shed like you would not believe and need a lot of activity (mental & physical) but they are also super smart, super biddable and very family oriented. (As in, they are obsessed with my husband and I and don't want to leave our sides usually).

We have a beagle and a corgi. The beagle is great with the kids. They climb all over him and he doesn't do anything. He has epilepsy so that's kind of a bummer. His medication makes him super hungry so he has gained a bunch of weight. (He looks like a Bassett hound he is so big). The corgi is a little on the cranky side. She is a herding dog and they use little nips to herd sheep so she is kind of mouthy. I don't like when she nips at the kids to get them to move. We has never bitten them but it worries me. We keep her separated most of the time and I think she likes it that way. Even when I let her out wit the kids she usually goes back in the kitchen.
