I've read only 10% of women have their water break before they go into labor. Most start with contractions and then it breaks or the doc does it for them.
What came first for you?

My contractions came long before my water broke but it still broke on it's own.

I didn't know I was having contractions until my water broke. I had to be told I was having contractions. I think I'm weird though so i wouldn't use my experience as typical.

With my first, I had 3 contractions, they stopped and 12 hours later my water broke. Then I was in active labor after that.

Definitely contractions & then lots of labor.... My water broke at the same time Penelope came out!

My contractions came first. The doctor eventually broke my water at the hospital, so who knows when it would have broken on its own...

Looking back I was having contractions but didn't know it. It wasnt until water broke and the contractions got pretty intense that I knew I was in labor.

@sweetkate: @krsmall: how did you not know you were having contractions? No pain or felt like Braxton hicks?

Water breaking! It happened in the lunch room at work. It was all dramatic, just like in the movies. I say although it is messy, water breaking first is pretty fun.
My contractions started naturally a few hours later.

My water broke, real, noticeable, uncomfortable contractions didn't start until I got into the car almost 2 hours later.

Contractions. They actually had to rupture my water because it did not want to do it by itself. (at this point I was 8cm 95% effaced) the moment my water broke... OH MY. the pain. As in contractions tripled in intensity. But I gave birth. Not even 10 mins later. ( note this is my second so it was much faster than my first )
For Mavrick I was induced. SO none of the above applies.

Contractions first. My water never broke on its own, the midwives had to do it.

@mediagirl: they weren't really painful so I chalked it up to Braxton hicks. My back also hurt a lot but I thought I had just overdone it that weekend (I had ds on a Monday).

My contractions were first - and my water didn't break naturally. The doctor broke it.

My water broke first and then I had to be induced because I didn't go into labor.

Contractions! My water did break on its own when I was in the hospital and after I had my epidural (I was 6 cm dilated at that point.)

My dr broke my water when I was at 9 cm, obviously I had plenty of contractions before that!

I don't know! I had contractions from 27 weeks after a car accident--they were clustered with a bunch on top of each other and then nothing for 20minutes or more.
My water broke at 39+6, and my contractions were still the same as at 27 weeks (stronger, but same spacing), so they put me on pitocin.
So... my water broke before the contractions that count started.

@mediagirl: Mine weren't painful, just really uncomfortable. @sweetkate: My experience is very similar to yours! I just thought I had overexerted myself

@cvbee: Oh my gosh, that's crazy. I was wondering if my water would break at work. Mine actually broke as I was in the bathroom getting ready for work.

The doctor had to break mine with both of my DDs, at about 7-8 cm both times .

My water broke on it's own. I was having very minor contractions during the nigh before, but nothing that kept me from sleeping, and they weren't regular.

with charlie, water started leaking and contractions started at the same time. but the full water breaking didn't happen until hours later.
with olive, contractions started and the doctor broke my water.

with our older daughter, my water 'broke' but more 'leaked' when i took some deep breaths. contractions started about 3 hours later, and came hard and fast!
with our younger daughter my water never broke, but when she arrived it was sort of like a tidal wave of disgusting! instead, with her labour, i just thought that i had bad gas--WRONG!

@cvbee: That's crazy!! I bet it was all sorts of drama!
nectarine / 2039 posts
@mediagirl: yeah, it was actually perfect because I was surrounded by all these women who have been through labour before, so they all swarmed around me and I didn't even have to think of anything. They gathered my stuff, and my boss drove me to the hospital, and his wife is a nurse at the hospital and she met me with a wheelchair at the drop-off zone. I felt like some kind of celebrity. It was quite fun. Not sure what they did with the poor fabric chair I was sitting on in the lunch room!

@cvbee: that is awesome! I was just imagining it at my work - I work with all men and one woman. The end result would not have been as awesome.

My water broke when I changed positions in bed in the morning. My contractions didn't start on their own, so I was given pitocin.

With DD, my water broke and then contractions started becoming regular and stronger. I had been having contractions for a couple weeks before that, but nothing consistent until my water broke.
With DS, I had regular, strong contractions for about 8 hours before my water broke.

Contractions and my water broke by itself. Once it did it did not stop! Woah there was a lot of fluid in there even for my small bump!!

My water broke. I wasn't even aware that I was having contractions for a couple of hours after that, even thought the machines in the hospital said otherwise.

With Toddler Girl, my water broke in transition. I didn't even notice, because I was in the tub. With Wonder Baby it broke an hour or so before my contractions started. And it was weird.
