I don't know if it helps you, but I would take him out for a walk or to the park, some activity where he can run around and you get a break from being right there with him. And then I'd put him to bed early.

I've noticed that DD's behavior is really tied to her sleep. If she's tired she's way more likely to act up and just be difficult to discipline. Of course, it's not like you can just turn a blind eye to bad behavior, even there is an explanation for it. So instead I try to find an activity that will keep her entertained/distracted from being tired while also wearing her out entirely. That way, when we start bedtime early, she's so worn out she goes down immediately. I've noticed that if we get into a pattern of her misbehaving, me discipling, her getting upset, etc... it just keeps repeating until she has a chance to "reset" by getting some good sleep in. So now I try to break that cycle when I see it starting, instead of continuing to feed into it.

@HeatherlovesKenny: I swear the kids tag-team me, too. The days that DD takes an awesome nap (3-4 hours) are ALWAYS the days DS wakes up after 30 minutes and won't go back to sleep. They have it out for us, I swear!
