I feel so unimaginative when I sit down to build with LO. I always build a house. What do you build?

LO is almost three and we are still doing just Duplos. He likes to build tunnels for his cars to go under, crazy looking towers, and different kinds of vehicles. He also likes to make pretend ice cream cones. Usually he builds and just wants me to see it. One day my mom helped him make a zoo with some plastic animals and he still talks about it.

Today I built a crib with DD2 for her baby, a cathedral with DD1, and a zoo with Toob animals with them both. We do a lot of castles, rocket ships/flying saucers and props for other toys.

I'm all about architecture, my DS is all about vehicles. The last time we played together, I built a train station and a hotel. He worked on the train and various service vehicles for the station.

We have built every structure imaginable (jail, zoo, drive thru restaurant, coffee shop, ice skating rink) with magnatiles.

My 3yo hasn't used his magnatiles in a few months but he would usually build a garage i.e. low structure with interior and exterior walls. Then he would move his cars and trains in and out of the building. He removes "doors" from the sides or pieces of roof to access the contents.

@ElbieKay: that's what my 4yo builds too...or a rocket with spaces for her cars

Mostly we build sheds for trains or a Paw Patrol "base" where the pups can park.

@Corduroy: just saw this and thought of you: http://picklebums.com/building-challenge-cards/

We've built libraries, schools, garages, houses (even a neighborhood once), castles, pyramids, farms, Ariel's treasure grotto, you name it! LO loves to construct buildings with *rooms* for small toys like Shopkins.

I would say mostly towers, tunnels, garages, car washes, buses, the "Pawtroller", trains, and houses. Oh and robots and dinosaurs.

We don't use Legos much (and our sets have things like rooms w/ doors, so less room for creativity), but with magnatiles we build things from the books (animals, boats, balls), or free standing buildings we invent ourselves. Usually it's castles for their Sofia the First figurines or cages/houses for their animals. I just got two sets of wheels, so now we make cars, too.
With bristle blocks (B. Toys Stackadoos), we build furniture (bunk beds, dressers, lamps, sofas); double decker busses, and slides.

@rattles: That's what I need. I do so much better with constraints than I do with unbridled creativity.

DD is just under 2 years old so at this point I don't build anything; I want her to explore her duplos and blocks without the influence of seeing an adult do it the "right" way (ie how toddlers can often interpret it when they see adults play with their toys).
