I just say sorry no thanks and hang up the phone.

I ask them to take me off the calling list. We don't get many because I'm on the do not call list. Mostly I get calls from colleges or political parties. They are all so annoying!! Especially when I ask them to take me off their list, they say they do, and a month later they call back!

This article from last week's NYT was depressing:

we get so many that I pick up the phone and immediately hang up!

ETA - we've told them not to call and we put our number on the do not call list but none of this seems to work for long.

We always have our home phone on silent, so we don't know when they call. They are starting to call cells now and when they do we immediately ask to be taken off their list.

We don't give out our home phone number so we don't answer the call unless we know the number (my in laws are pretty much the only people who call our home number). When we first got a home phone number we would answer the calls and it just got too annoying. Whoever had our number before us apparently liked to not pay their bills so we get calls from collections companies ALL the time!! We actually planned to just cancel our home phone but when we called Comcast they told us they would take $25 per month off our bill to KEEP it. So it cost us less money to keep it than to get rid of it...

i cut them off and say that i'm not interested, and then ask to be removed from their calling list. the last part is the main reason why i don't just hang up on them.

I usually say "Sorry not interesed, please take me off your calling list" and hang up. Legally they are supposed to remove you 30 days after requesting it (if it happens who knows!)

My husband likes to toy with them and waste their time right back. He sees what nonsense they'll put up with before they hang up. It drives me crazy, but it brings him some sort of sick pleasure.
