R is only 4 months so we have a couple months before we will start with anything other then milk.
I keep seeing that everyone here does purees but how is that different then baby food? Does no one just use baby food these days?

Same thing! Just some people make their own and some people buy. It's basically just mushy/watery food (sounds delish right? ).

Purees are baby food! We usually get the pouches or the containers...

Same! Baby food whether purchased in jars or homemade ARE purees.

It's just the fruit/vegetable blended until smooth with maybe a little water (or BM/F if the puree is homemade).
I don't know what baby food used to be like, but I think it's the same thing! (maybe without any preservatives or other additives)

@hilsy85: @2PeasinaPod: @regberadaisy: @MsLipGloss: OK, thanks! Now I feel stupid for asking but I wasn't sure if it was the same thing or not.

@Smurfette: Haha, I totally think people just don't like to say 'baby food' anymore! I think sometimes people also use 'purees' to distinguish between homemade vs. jarred 'baby food.'

@Smurfette: I think people say "purees" instead of just saying "baby food" because a lot of people do BLW and technically that's still baby food since its food for babies, so purees is more clear. It's the mushy stuff.

@JerricaBenton: Totally agree! I think people like me are finding that we're not the domestic goddesses we'd hoped we'd be in making nutritious homemade baby food from scratch, but saying "purees" helps me hide my shame and I don't have to admit my baby eats 90% of his meals from a jar (but an organic jar! Does that make it better?).

@Arden: ditto. That's the only time I say purees.

I consider it a texture. Anything mushed or put through a food processer/blender.

@Smurfette: Just like previous posters have said all baby food whether home made or store bought is pureed fruits or veggies, but I think people use the term puree more for homemade baby food

@Smurfette: Don't feel stupid! I have no idea what half the stuff is that people talk about on HB, but I'm too afraid to ask!
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@JerricaBenton: I thought purees were all home made and had no clue how everyone had the time!
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Smurfette: And if I ever say I'm doing purees, know that I really mean baby food. There's no way I'm going to make my own baby food for Xander when I can just buy a jar all ready to go!

@Adira: I am with you! I would rather spend more time with her on the weekends, instead of making food for the week.

@Smurfette: The only food I *make* LO is the BLW foods I give her to try . . . and that usually involves mashing things up with a fork! I would rather spend the time playing with her, too, than stressing about additional shopping/ cooking/ and portioning . . . I will be doing plenty of that when she gets a little older!

I think purée can also be a broader term especially when you get into meat and other combo mixes. To me those are puréed versions of regular meals.

baby food is puree lol
i felt bad in the beginning about giving him jar food so I attempted to make everything myself. However, I felt very defeated at one point because I spent hours making some things only that he wouldn't even eat a bite! At the end I gave in and we bought a bunch of jars, so at least I won't have that urge to throw LO into the trashcan when he doesn't eat my homemade purees. I still have a bunch of those jars in the pantry (he is eating finger foods now) and I don't know what to do with them. uh.
