My neighbor served some with rice (I'd never thought of putting it over rice) and I enjoyed it.
Usually we just do cornbread

I'm the only person I know who doesn't like cornbread. I like chili with homemade biscuits.

Cheddar biscuits. Some with jalapeno for people that like spicy. or Garlic bread. And sour cream for the top.

Cornbread. I'd also serve with toppings: cheese, avocado, tortilla chips, etc.

@MaryM: I actually like to put my chill over pasta!
You could do a cornbread and cracker tray? Some like saltines but some also like a ritz type cracker. Maybe add the corn chips too.
Hot dogs are great because kids can eat those and people could make chili dogs. But nachos are a great idea too.
Also maybe just a fruit/veggie/cheese tray prior?

@mrsjd: oh Fritos! That sounds good!
So many suggestions for cornbread - it would have never crossed my mind!
Thanks for all the suggestions!

macaroni noodles. We always made chili mac growing up. I basically just ate the noodles.

We have chili for Christmas every year. It's pretty stand alone, we just have a little toppings bar. Cheese, sour cream, diced onions and oyster crackers.

@MaryM: weird. I have only ever had it with rice my whole life!
Garlic bread is nice with chili. Mashed potato is nice with it too.

Cornbread. I'd also have a full bar of toppings: sour cream, crackers, cheese, noodles, onions, hot sauces, etc.

Baked potatoes! And as others mentioned cornbread, Fritos, and crackers are other favorites at our house. (Not all at the same time!)

Texas Toast!
DH makes a really hearty chili so we usually don't even need to eat anything else.

Oh, I like cornbread a ton, but I think I would love a baked potato as well, that sounds super yum!
I am assuming that this is traditional red chili....but if it's something like a white chicken chili, I like that with flour tortillas.

Cornbread! And DH, like a poster above, likes to have his over rice. Definitely sour cream to mix in and grated cheese to sprinkle on top.

@MaryM: a coworker served it to me like that one time - with a pat of butter on the rice. It was delicious!

If its a chili with beans, I like cornbread or having a nacho toppings bar (tortilla chips, salsa, guac, sour cream, cheese, chopped tomatoes, scallions, etc).
If its an all-meat Texas or Cincy style chili, I like spaghetti and cheese or saltines.
DH's family always serves their chili with Triscuits and a tossed green salad. So random.

I had mine with sour cream and cornbread today. Maybe also offer a salad.

We went to a party and they had a chili bar. Chili + fixins (cheese, sour cream, hot sauce, avocado, plain pasta, fritos, rice, corn bread, etc.) It was great!
pear / 1657 posts
Any of the above things - I love lots of toppings, and things to adjust the spiciness like hot sauce or sour cream.
I've also done quinoa with chili

Green chili cornbread, sour cream, & scallions!
Maybe even some crispy oven-seasoned potatoes.

@Mamaof2:
Cornbread ( I love jalapeno cheddar)
Noodles
Nacho chips

Baked potatoes, hotdogs, and cornbread, in addition to a toppings bar (cheese, cilantro, onions, hot sauces, sour cream, etc.).
I have been craving chili so much but it gives me the worse heartburn while pregnant!
Growing up we always had it with rice but maybe that's a Hawaiian thing? My father was born and raised in HI and they have tons of local food customs that differ both from the mainland and from the Asian countries of origin.

I only usually serve mine with a toppings bar. Green onion, avocado, sour cream, and shredded cheese. If I really needed something else with it, I'd probably do cheese toast.

I hate cornbread, so I do popovers. A mix of plain and jalapeno-cheese.
ETA: My dad loves his over white rice. As a Texan, I have to add that Frito pie is AMAZING (ie: served on top of fritos)

We always do rice. Farro would be good too. I have had it with cornbread before.
kiwi / 549 posts
Cornbread. Fritos or tortilla chips. Baked potato. And all the fixings.

I'm craving chili. So strange since up til about 5 years ago I wouldn't touch it. This rice idea is appealing to me.

We normally eat it with rice and sometimes some grated cheese. If id serve this for guests (and sometimes for just us) I add a green salad, tomates, some form of avocado and why not some sour cream!

@Winterbee15: what the heck, were you at the same house I was for dinner tonight?!
Our friends from the Midwest served up chili with cornbread (normal) with hot dogs, macaroni noodles and peanut belly and jelly sandwiches. I was like, 🤔🤔🤔 but I liked the macaroni! They said they didn't know the PB sandwich thing was weird until they started moving around the country for the military.

@birdofafeather: @Winterbee15: ha! I have to admit I thought the PB&J thing was a joke! I have never heard of eating that along with chili
