Farm Fresh, Kroger, Food Lion, Harris Teeter, and Walmart. Trader Joes and Whole Foods about 30-40 min. I don't like any of the grocery stores in my city. My favorite is Martins/Ukrops but they don't have them here!

@bpcmarj: in worcester, i only went in once though, maybe it was a bad day for them, but i wasn't impressed =( it's the only place i've ever needed a quarter to use a cart!

@mrs. bird: I have only been to one when visiting family in NC, but I loved it there, and my sister swore by it. I think there might be one in Bridgewater that I may try to swing into if I am ever up that way.

Here we have Publix and Winn Dixie mostly (maybe other stuff I'm not aware of?) in Central FL. I prefer Publix but shop at Winn Dixie due to prices.
When I lived in NJ, I preferred Shop Rite.
When I lived in NC, I liked Food Lion and LOVED Harris Teeter.
When I lived in IN, I really LOVED Meijer (like a clean Walmart) and also LOVED Kroger. Especially their gas perks, which I get from Winn Dixie here too.
If I could pick one place... it would probably be.... hmmm Kroger?

In our town? Just Save-a-Lot. Next one over, Publix and Winn-Dixie. One more over, Walmart. An hour away in the city - Sam's Club, Costco, BJ's, Aldi's, Super Target, etc.
pear / 1812 posts
We have Walmart, Target, Kroger, Alberstons, Tom Thumb (Which is the same as Safeway), Whole Foods, Fiesta, Sams Club, Costco, Aldi , Central Market and Trader Joes.
We used to have a Winn Dixie but they completely moved out of the area. I have heard they completely moved out of the south. Bummer because I loved them.
We are Kroger shoppers though. Best prices for the hassle. Walmart has similar prices but I can't stand the number of shoppers and lack of registers. It always takes MUCH longer there for the same stuff. I also used to shop at Aldi for certain stuff because their prices were so great. We don't have one nearby anymore and the drive isn't worth the savings on those limited items.

@bpcmarj: there's one in Milford that I went to before, not impressed and will stick to Stop and shop.

@lavender: did you have to use a quarter for the shopping cart??? i was so confused and they clerk looked at us like we were stupid when we had to get change before we could get a cart. i've never seen anything like it before!

Tom Thumb (Safeway), Kroger, Albertson's, Central Market, Market Street, Whole Foods, Target, WalMart, and WalMart Neighborhood Market - and I'm in North Texas. We do most of our shopping at Target and Tom Thumb.
I miss Big Y, from when I lived in the Northeast.

I live in a small town where we have a smallish Wal-Mart .. however it does have a food section and an "Independent" (owned by Loblaws).

@DisneyBee: I might be too young to remember alpha beta but I used to work at food 4 less and I remember a guy telling me he was around when the company bought out alpha beta (:
Around us, well within 20 minute drive, we have a Food4Less (owned by Kroger), Stater Bros., Fresh and Easy, Rio Ranch, Super Walmart, Super Target, Tapatio, Albertson's, Sprouts, Ralph's, Costco, Sam's Club, and Cardenas (: The closest to us is Rio Ranch but I think they're overpriced so we shop at Food4Less. Plus, the husband works at Food4Less, so we like it (:

We are spoiled. There is both a Trader Joes and a Whole Foods within 5 - 10 minutes. There is an Acme even closer but for some reason the whole store smells like rotisserie chicken, so I try to avoid it. There is also a Giant not far away.

In my town, Thriftway, Fred Meyer, Albertson's and Target.
Nearby you can add: Whole Foods, New Seasons Market, Safeway, and Zupan's.

@DisneyBee: I totally remember Alpha Beta and Hughes! Wow, old school... Haven't heard those names in years! My mom used to always take me with her to Lucky's... I think Albertson's bought them out? I have no idea because I moved out of SoCal for a while.
Near us: Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Target, Ralphs (Kroger), Fresh & Easy, Von's/Pavilions, Smart & Final, Gelson's, Bristol Farms, and Korean supermarkets...
Sort of near: Mitsuwa (Japanese), Costco, Sprouts, Albertson's
I wish we had Wegman's near us!

We have Giant, Wegman's, Target and Costco in easy driving distance (<30 minutes).

@DisneyBee: I remember Alpha-Beta!! They all eventually closed or turned into Luckys ... which then turned into Albertsons .... crazy!
blogger / eggplant / 11551 posts
never heard of those!
we have ralph's, albertson's, trader joe's, whole foods, sprouts, walmart, target, fresh 'n easy, mother's market, stater bros... and several asian/ethnic markets.... we have a bunch!
cherry / 116 posts
Lots! pretty much everything from mom and pop groceries to big national ones to fancy specialty ones and of course lots of ethnic ones
My favorites though are Rainbow because of the pricing, selection and bulk foods, bi-rite because of the quality of products, Nijiya for Japanese, and New May Wah for Asian but not Japanese.

Our neighborhood stores are Östenssons and ICA. Then there's Willy's, ICA Maxi, ÖoB, and Netto, not that far away. Further the other way there's COOP and Hemköp aside from more branches of the stores I've already mentioned.
nectarine / 2600 posts
Blah, the chains here are called Migros and Coop. (Co-op??) The ones I miss from the states are Acme, Safeway, Shopright. (Lived in NJ and NoVa)

I'm in NC too. We have Food Lion, Harris Teeter, Lowes Foods, and Walmart. There is a Trader Joes and Whole Foods in the city 10 min away.

@mrs. bird: that's funny - didn't even know they had one in Worcester. I always think Price Chopper in Worcester. They actually have an excellent natural food store out there, Living Earth.
We have a Star Market, Stop & Shop, Trader Joes & Whole Foods that we shop regularly.
They're putting a Wegmans close by, we'll probably shop there too.
bananas / 9628 posts
@rachiecakes: yes! I'm less than 5 minutes from living earth. We love their restarunt EVO. Wegmans is awesome! Ours is 15 minutes away, but totally worth it

I miss Food Lion! We have Kroger, Aldi, and Wal Mart. We also have a nice local shop called Baesler's.

Oh wait! I have an Aldis too! It doesn't have grocery bags and you put a quarter in to get a cart. It's ghetto.
I've never even heard of most of these!
bananas / 9628 posts
@MrsTiz: i'm glad mine isn't the only one you need the quarter for, i was beginning to think aldi was afraid of my 'hood
we also have another similar place called price rite, they don't have bags either, well they do but you have to pay for them. it's nicer than our aldi and they often have some organic items, which our aldi did not the one time i went in.
kiwi / 637 posts
We have loblaws, metro, sobeys, costco, food basics and my personals fave, Farm Boy! There is also an outdoor fresh produce market about 10 minutes walking from our house that runs from late spring until Halloween! I can't wait for it to open again!
pomelo / 5720 posts
We have Stop N Shop, Market Basket, Shaws, Whole Foods, BJ's, Costco, and Trader Joe's. I'm sure we have Walmarts that carry food too, but I don't have one nearby.
grapefruit / 4681 posts
@FutureMrsMcK: Where is there a Wegman's? Do you mean the one in Harrisburg? I'm about 20 min from you.
We have Gaint, Weis and Stauffer's (local store with a few locations). Our Target just started to get food (ours doesn't have meat yet) and some of the Walmarts have full groceries but not all.
I love Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, and Wegman's but they are all 1+ hours away. We usually make the drive to stock up on certain things for LO an hit all 3! They were in abundance where I went to college (NJ) and I got spoiled!
watermelon / 14206 posts
Walmart, Food Lion, Bi-lo, Harris Teeter, Loews Foods, Target, Earth Fare

@anbanan15: Where do you live in the land of Stauffers and Weis? I loved both places when we lived in that neck of the woods...
GOLD / wonderful pea / 17697 posts
@anbanan15: the one in Mechanicsburg. I heard they are building one in Harrisburg? Whereabouts are you?
pomelo / 5000 posts
Kroger, Food Lion, Giant, Harris Teeter, Target, Whole Foods, Fresh Market, Trader Joe's.
A bunch of ethnic markets and little hippie co-op types of spots.
We're spoiled with all the choices and I would miss them if we move!
pear / 1571 posts
@anbanan15: Yep, that was my old address, although we lived closer to Ephrata. Sometimes I MISS the close shopping and the variety of grocery stores.
And now I'm hearing the Stauffer's of Kissell Hill jingle in my head, lol.
