@beaker: I love that series!
HP, even though it's technically not an "adult" series. Also, SK's The Dark Tower series. The Time Traveler's Wife is probably my favorite, though. It's one I can reread again and again.
Oh, and the Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde. Absurd and witty.

@NurseMommy: I've read almost everything he has written. Hard boiled wonderland was one of the weirder ones to me.

Madame Bovary to me is just hands-down the best novel ever written. The Sound and the Fury would be my close second. Neither of them were particularly easy reads for me , but they had the most impact.
As far as favorite novel for the sheer pleasure of reading, it is a tie between Emma and Pride and Prejudice.

@MUI831: me too!! She was my favourite author growing up and I always said I wanted a dd named Maeve. Dh won't go for it

Not my favorite book, but the book that just blew me away and made me think, "Wow, that was an incredible piece of writing," was The Secret History by Donna Tartt.

@locavore_mama: I'm almost done with Night Road and it is heart wrenching!!
Jane Eyre, but I haven't read it in at least 15 years. I read it a ton in high school.

For a single novel, I love Catch-22. Both funny and sad at the same time. The HP series is one that I'm sure I will read over and over again throughout life.

@Adira: I was so sad when Robert Jordan died before he could finish the Wheel of Time series!
I think my favorite of all time is Voyager from the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon - which clearly isn't a stand alone book, so I don't know if it counts?

1984 and Price and Prejudice (eclectic I know). Growing up it was The Giver and the Wrinkle in Time series. ETA oh I'll add East of Eden too. Too many good books to just pick one!

A Fine Balance (Rohinton Mistry)

Ooo, I'm a big reader so there are many! These are a few I've read over and over.
Gone With the Wind
Catcher in the Rye
Memoirs of a Geisha
The Joy Luck Club
Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier
Not necessarily a book (I love the play) but I love One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, also.
I'm also a big HP fan. I really liked the Hunger games books too.

It's always hard to just pick one. My favorites are:
The Great Gatsby
One Hundred Years of Solitude
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
I'm reading The Fault In Our Stars now and loving it. It's one of the only books that has brought tears to my eyes!

@BeachMama: ah, thank you for reminding me!!! Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is my all time fave!!

My favorite is The Time Traveller's Wife but The Birth House is a close 2nd

@raspberries: Me too!! But I think Brandon Sanderson did an awesome job finishing it!

@Worrywart: Pillars of the Earth was so so so so fantastic.
I really can't choose just one. I loved HP, I LOVE the Game of Thrones series, I loved memoirs of a geisha, I loved stardust...
I just seriously can't choose one. There are so many more too.

I love the Time Travelers Wife, HP (of course), the Night Circus.

@fussygal: ohh, Time Travelers Wife. So good. Hey there, book soulmate
nectarine / 2834 posts
@Rainbow Sprinkles: That book was A.Mazing. Although I read it on a flight across the Pacific...with a stop in Japan....not the best timing! But I couldn't put it down.
One book that really stands out in my mind is After Long Silence. I read it in high school so it may be awful but it was an amazing story of survival and love during the Holocaust.

@yoursilverlining: Wolf Hall sounds really interesting! I'm going to check it out.
pomegranate / 3791 posts
I'm with everyone who said the HP series! My favorites are the first and last....I mean, Sorcerer's Stone is just so amazing and you can't re-create the discovery of it and learning everything about the magical world. But obviously the last book is much more dark, and I just love the writing and the story.
I don't know if I have a favorite adult book. Not sure I should admit this, but I typically prefer the YA stuff.
pear / 1718 posts
The Space Between Us by Thrity Umrigar. Lovvvve that book! To Kill a Mockingbird is probably next on the list.
GOLD / squash / 13464 posts
@Rainbow Sprinkles: Unbroken was SUCH an incredible read!! Far and away my favorite non-fiction book!
I think A Prayer For Owen Meany is my favorite fiction but it's so hard to choose!! My favorite recent read was Gone Girl.
pomelo / 5509 posts
@MamaMoose: Ohhhh A Prayer for Owen Meany!
Also, I'm reading Gone Girl right now. Like, literally sitting here reading it right now.

@BeachMama: @NurseMommy: I want to read Incredibly Loud but I am so scared I will just spend the whole time sniveling and sobbing. I haven't seen the whole movie (caught the tail end which was a mistake) so I am not entirely sure of the premise, but it sure got me emotional!
There are so many! HP series of course, I really want to read the Song of Ice and Fire series, but I watch the TV show and would hate to be disappointed by the live action version since books are always better.
As a child I loved a Wrinkle in Time and the subsequent books. I also liked The Hunger Games, Can You Keep a Secret? and the Shopaholic series (escapist reading for sure). I was forced to read a lot of books in my AP English classes in high school so I got kind of resentful of "hard" reads... Which I am ashamed of now, looking bad. I spend a lot of my time escapist reading, which I really need to read some of these great books you ladies are recommending! I want to read The Kiterunner and The Namesake. I will be going through this list!

@IRunForFun: I was so mad when they made that HORRIBLE movie Simon Birch!!! So bad John Irving wouldn't even let them use the same name/title.
