Is there really a difference between National Academy of Early Childhood Programs (NAEYC) an accredited or non accredited school when you're choosing a school for your toddler? Pricing isn't factor, however the waiting list for an accredited program is. How important is it to send your child to an accredited program? Is there a noticeable difference? What was your experience?

I dont have experience sending LO to one but I trained in a NAEYC accredited preschool. It was very important to them to be accredited it meant you had better teacher to child ratio, the curriculum taught was specific, teachers had to be certified, and the facility had to be very well maintained and clean. I would definitely want an accredited school for my LO.

I've worked at NAEYC accredited preschools and I think it's pretty important. If a school isn't accredited, it doesn't necessarily mean they're bad. However, I don't think it's too difficult to go through the process, so I'd question a school that didn't try. I definitely wouldn't send LO to a facility that failed. To me, it means the people/directors/staff really care about standards. I would always choose an accredited preschool for my LO if I had that option.

I would want an NAEYC accredited school. Like Mewtill said it means they care about standards. It probably means they encourage continuing education for their teachers. As a toddler I would maybe settle for one that's not accredited (or at least til you can get off of a waiting list) and do home care with someone you know and trust. But by pre-k age I would definitely want accredited programs only. And the reasoning behind that (the age difference) for me is that I think that as they learn more it takes a little more creativity to set up learning experiences throughout the day. That's just my personal opinion though and if you can afford accredited programs all the way then yeah I'd go for that!

@pinkb: @mewtill: @googly-eyes: Thanks for your input, I'm on the waiting list of all the accredited programs in our area, but I'm looking at 1 to 2 years wait to get my LO into their program. I was suppose to go back to work full time once my LO is 1. He's 7 months right now so I really wanted to figure out our plans and I didn't want to leave it last min.
