Mostly for a non swimmer 3+?
Our swim instructors are offering 1/2 hour lessons for $20 each this summer. Is that normal? It seems so high to me!

Wow! DDs are 38$ for 8 sessions, 1/2 hour. She's only 20 months though so I have to get in the pool with her. Its mostly just play time with some mild "lessons" every 5 mins

If you pay by the lesson with ours its $30 per half hour lesson so $20 sounds great! Swim lessons for me are more of a safety issue than a fun activity so I didn't want to go cheap on this particular extracurricular.
ETA this is for group lessons with 4 kids total and parents in the water with them

@mediagirl: is that one on one lessons? That's the only way I could see them charging $20 per class. A private lesson at our pool is $25 for 30 minutes. But the regular swim class where it's a group of kids with one or two teachers is $50 for 8 classes (and each class is 30 minutes)

I generally like the group class bc LO learns a lot by watching the more skilled kids swimming. She can see what the teacher is trying to get them to do. They recommend private lessons when there's a skill level that a kid just can't pass

We go to aquatots and it is 80$/month (doesn't matter if they are 4 or 5 week months) for a class that is one instructor w up to 4 kids.

The swim schools by me are around $20 per half hour, but the park district works out to $7-8.

$135 or $145, I can't remember, for 8 lessons, around 30 mins.

@sandy: these are private. I'm thinking more about it and think group would be better for us for reasons you mentioned!

Private swim lessons at our local YMCA are $31 for half an hour ($52/hour), plus the $77/year ymca membership fee, so $20 sounds like a steal.

@mediagirl: group lessons are great! For J's age, the max students in his group lesson would be 4- so they still get a ton of 1x1 time and great instruction. We pay about $40 for 7 weeks. I think it's about that price per lesson for private lessons

$20 is inexpensive for private lessons. I pay $100 for 7 weeks 1/2 hour group lessons and that was the least expensive I could find in our area of NJ.

We do semi-private (2 person classes) - $194 for 8 sessions and it gets cheaper the more lessons you buy upfront. Right now we are paying semi-private rates but are actually getting private lessons bc Noelle's friend stopped swim lessons and nobody else took up that time slot.

Currently we are paying $80 a month for a 30 min weekly class (4 kids per class)
He had semi-private classes (2 kids for weekly 30 minute class) was a little bit more.

@mediagirl: We've been in lessons for quite a while and I think my LO would actually do better in private. I'm actually considering pulling him to look elsewhere because in the 1.5 years he has been in his same class he has shown nearly no improvement. And to answer your question it's $90/month for 1/2 sessions once a week in a class with up to 4 kids.

We did group lessons for a couple of months last year and it was $75/month. But they did nothing for him. This year he's signed up for ISR, which is ridiculous expensive ($70/week), but he's guaranteed to be swimming in 6 weeks. It's private and at his age and with the amount of water we're around, I think it'll be worth it in the end. I've looked at several options in the area, and almost all of them are in group settings and around $75/month.

We just finished our first Aquatots at our local YMCA (in Central PA). It was $80 for non-members for 8 weeks. There were about 8 other kids in the class.
