40 mins... we did CIO extinction. We tried the checks put that made him more mad. The first night was BAD but after the first night, the longest he has cried has been 5 - 10 mins and now it's nothing.

@littlek: other than the initial forty minutes the first night, did he cry more throughout that night? Did you still do night feedings?

We used CIO. Once she did 49 minutes for a nap and at night the longest was 45. She doesn't cry at all at night now and naps are pretty good too. My rule is that if she cries for more than 10 minutes at night or it's frantic, she needs something, like to be fed.

sounds like you are having a tough time
Our method was this:
put him down drowsy but awake
first cry: wait 5 mins, then go up and rock him back to sleep
second cry: wait 10 mins, then go up and rock him back to sleep
third cry: wait 15 mins, then go up and rock him back to sleep
every cry after that was a 15 min wait as well.
We never had to do more than 1 15 min wait.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: At the beginning he'd wake up at 3 a.m., fuss and then fall asleep. We don't do night feedings, when he started daycare at 4 months he stopped his night feeds. If he's sick, he will sometimes wake up once but that is rare. He sleeps 12 hours a night.

@mrs. wagon: so you actually rocked baxk to sleep and put him back in crib asleep?
Yes, very tough time. Lo hasnt slept longer than a 45 minute stretch in almost three months. She wakes 12+ times a night.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: yes. As he got better we'd start to put him down drowsy but awake, and as he got even better we wouldn't pick him up (we'd pat him on the back and he'd calm down). We kind of tailored our response to how bad he was reacting.

With CIO probably around 30 minutes? Though that was always for naps. For bedtime in the beginning maybe 10 minutes and nowadays not really at all - to the point that if she does cry out in the night I go to her right away since it's so rare.
I'm so sorry you're having a rough time I don't have any advice, but wish you the best of luck in getting things to a good place.

@mrs. wagon: hmmm. I was reading this article which made me think it was a bad idea to put her down asleep? That is what we are doing now and I am a total sleep deprived zombie.
But I have always been pretty anti CIO and am all for gentler methods of sleep training!

When my LO was 5.5 months we tried the Ferber Method. My LO cried for an 1.5 hours the first night, he never figured it out how to put him self to sleep. It was heartwrenching so I would pick him up and rock him back to sleep.
We tried CIO for 5 days with no success, Thinking we would wait longer. We waited too long and now when we try CIO at 8 months he just stands in his crib and wails, I can't handle it.
We've resorted to co-sleeping thinking one of these days we will try again. I've read sleep training in the 8-11 months is not a good time for sleep training. So maybe when he is 1? Who knows.

30 min. I felt horrible for doing it, but it seemed to work. Since then, I won't let her go more than 15 min.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: how does she do when you guys co-sleep? It't the only way any of us get any sleep.
blogger / watermelon / 14218 posts
@Rainbow Sprinkles: yeah, if that's what you're doing now then I would try something else. Maybe try to calm her without picking her up? We rocked him back to sleep because even with doing that, he was improving rapidly. He was relatively easy to sleep train, compared to the other experiences I've been hearing (like yours).
Still, one of the hardest things of parenting ever... it physically hurts to hear my babies cry

Gosh, I hate sleep training. We've been trying to train lately too. We tried CIO for a few nights, but like others have said, it's like he was NEVER going to go to sleep. One night it went on for nearly 2 hours with every 15 min checks before I finally gave in and rocked him to sleep. The checks just seemed to make him even angrier. We decided to switch to the PU/PD method with a strong bedtime routine and initially getting him down has gotten so much easier. And he goes down a lot earlier (7p instead of 9) Problem is, it seems like his wakings start earlier in the night and are more frequent. So last night, we tried CIO again at 2 am and he cried for about 30 min. Before finally falling asleep. Of course it stressed me out so much I was awake most of the night even after he fell asleep! I feel for you!
