LO is about to transition out of what she's learning since the last newsletter, but most recently they are working on: The letter Q, and writing it, melting snowmen, they have also been sledding (LO loves this!), and I think talking about what they got for Christmas, and drawing it. LO never tells me what she does so it's nice to get a little update through FB weekly.

@Bao: My son is really into this Algebra app called Dragonbox. I showed my mom how he can solve equations and she was like, why is a 6yo learning algebra? Haha, fair point mom, touche.

I think their addresses, winter stuff and scissor cutting in LO 1's class. I misplaced the newsletter from LO 2's teacher.

@Bao: It sounds more impressive than it is... with apps, anyone can learn algebra. Apps these days are truly amazing!

They are learning about about Dr. King. It's cute LO came home last night and told me she learned about Luther Martin and that everyone needs to love everyone and hold hands.

They are working on drawing a circle (LO can already do this, but she loves the drawing time), 2 new signs, and beginner calendar stuff. And lots of play time in there!

@mrbee: Algebra instruction starts in K/1!
Basically finding an unknown quantity. So, if I have 3 and I need 4, how many do I need....that is basic algebraic thinking in the early grades. I will have to check out that app! I am excited that we have so much technology that we can use to help kids see these concepts more concretely. I have pretty high hopes that the next generation of kids will have a much more firm grasp of the "why" behind math!

@Mrs. Lion: Wow, really?? I didn't know that... my son was in first grade when we moved, but his math all seemed focused on arithmatic.

LO is learning about maps. Last week they worked on a project to identify where they live (street, city, state, country, planet). This week they are going into more depth with exploring countries. Earlier this week they learned about China, and today they are learning about Mexico.

@mrbee: Not so much "algebra" the way we think of it in the older grades, but "algebraic thinking", which prepares them to think abstractly when they are older.
If you look at the common core standards for k/1 you can see what they mean, but this site is probably easier to read for parents who aren't as used to the common core lingo.
