Pinkalicious books. My mom gave DD a whole set of them for Christmas and I haaaaate them!

I second all the mentions of Dr. Seuss! I feel like that's bad to say, but I really don't like all the made up words and crazy repetition.
DD was also gifted a Splat the Cat book and I can't stand it. It's just really stupid and tries so hard to teach a lesson. I don't mind that in books, but only if it's not so obvious.
@yellowbird: Yes! We have the original Oliva which isn't too bad, but is still annoying. However the Fairy Princess one drives me nuts. I can't quite put my finger on it, but I think it's trying too hard to make the whole princess thing "lame" to the point of smacking you over the head with it. Plus Olivia is just an annoying diva.

I can't stand the Polar Bear, Polar Bear -What Do You See? books (and the others like that).
I love Dr. Seuss though!

I can't stand Curious George. George was NOT a very good monkey . He's always doing something stupid and then it magically works out. Whenever I do bedtime DS makes me read at least 2 of them.
I also can't stand Henny Penney. The story is so stupid and repetitive with those awful names (Henny Penney, Turkey Lurkey, Loosey Goosey, etc). And then they get eaten in the end! What kind of lesson is that?

@fancyfunction: ha! I would mail you our copy if you didn't already have it!

@Mrs. Cereal: we had a Mirabelle phase. Those books are so dumb.

Some Dr. Suess books I like but some I really don't like at all.
The book that is driving me crazy now is Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. Aunts and pants do not rhyme and it trips me up every single time! All booms with regional rhyming make me mad!

@nana87: So I just had to go and look at the "K" page in the ABC Dr Seuss book, why is that awkward?
blogger / grapefruit / 4836 posts
@Mrs.KMM: ahh this one is lo's favorite at bedtime right now. We read it every.single.night.
I really really hate Love You Forever. It really creeps me out and screams boundary issues

Not exactly a kid book, but when I read the first 2 Twilight books I was like HOW IS THIS WRITTEN FOR TEENAGERS!? THIS IS AWFUL! I stopped reading them and swore I would never let a daughter of mine read such drivel.
pear / 1521 posts
@Applesandbananas: I love me some Sandra Boynton but that one is rough! I only read it if I'm feeling extra silly. I read all the others all the time!!
I hate "The Little Red Hen" and now that I looked it up I dislike even more: "The Little Red Hen offers a moralistic tale of the importance of hard work and the shame as well as consequences of laziness without the use of religious quotes." -Wikipedia.
I think I'm actually going to donate that one...

Suppose You Meet a Dinosaur - We were gifted this one, and it's a Scholastic book. I hate it because of a page in the middle that goes "the dinosaur is worried that this brickle snack will make her fat" or some such. I change the words. Why in the world would a book on manners for toddlers also introduce body shaming?

all dr seuss (board books- ugh); dragons love tacos (thought it sounded so cute but it's not!); guess how much i love/i'll love you forever/on the night you were born/goodnight sleepy bears/anything overly cheesy or lame.
we are very into curious george at my house now (the original books from the '60's, we have a whole set that was mine) and while i love them, they are SO LONG. sometimes i abbreviate...

@Mrs. Lion: @simplyfelicity: OMG, this book!! WTF?? My BFF bought it for E because she loves reading it to her son and I was like "whaaaaaat????" when I read it. So creepy!
I also hate Dr Seuss books because they are so bloody long abd E loves them! Gah!
Also - Stick Man. That book is utter shite.

@Mrs. Lion: @simplyfelicity: @Cherrybee: THANK YOU. I can't believe this thread got this far without that one mentioned. Our former nanny gave it to us as a goodbye present so I haven't gotten rid of it ... but, uh, I hid it. SO CREEPY AND WRONG.
Also not really a Seuss fan!

@autumnlove: funny those are my faves right now.@Mrs. Lion: @simplyfelicity: I almost threw it out the first time I read it. I think I'll donate it to the library.

Any book that's a tv show or movie transcribed into a book. The family I nanny for has Inside Out in book form from the library right now. So, so long. I cringe when it's picked.

@lioneyes: haha those Curious George books are sooooo long but my daughter loves them so much. And they're good books with a good story so I usually don't mind reading one.

Yes, Love You Forever is just weird... luckily, he doesn't like it.
pear / 1503 posts
Yes! I'll love you forever!!! So creepy. MIL gave it to us. Actually, about half the books she gave us I hate. Could be a coincidence...
Others I dislike are: Mortimer (all the crash, clang, bang, etc.), Thomas's Snowsuit (I don't know what the point is), plus all the books we have pictures but no story in them. There are a few that only DH will read, and I've deliberately blocked them out of my memory.

I hate "Guess How Much I Love You" with a passion. I don't understand why big nut down hair has to keep "one upping" his/her own kid!!! Just let your freaking kid express that they love you a lot!!!!!
pear / 1521 posts
@LindsayLou: Oh yea, those are terrible too. We have Finding Nemo and it's really super dark in non-animated form!
cantaloupe / 6146 posts
Whenever I don't like one I "return it to the library". And thank goodness he doesn't know which are ours and which are the library's
i hate the doggies book by sandra boynton but don't have the heart to throw it away.
i love a bunch of the "long" books that some of the pps hate.
persimmon / 1270 posts
@simplyfelicity: the pictures in that book are so nice, but it's so so creepy i can't handle it.
Also hate guess how much I love you.
pomelo / 5573 posts
@mediagirl: I feel like that too! Just let your kid tell you he loves you without always having to say you love him more! It makes me crazy.
I can't think of names right now but we have a few books where the rhyme scheme is off and it makes me crazy, I have to rewrite the lines so that the metre is right.
Some of the Boynton books bother me in places - my husband hates in Hey Wake Up where they tell the elephant that he's too big to use the swings and he has to go do big guy things, and in Oh My Oh My Oh Dinosaurs where they say the dinosaurs aren't cute.
kiwi / 556 posts
@skipra: Me too! I always `end up saying "Pahnts" to preserve the rhyme.
I also can't stand goodnight moon. That room gives me the heebie jeebies.
blogger / grapefruit / 4836 posts
@erinbaderin: It annoys the mess out of me that after the animals in the goodnight book get ready for bed they go upstairs and exercise! Who does that?!? That makes no sense!

@nana87: Kick a kettle/kite/and a king's KERCHOO? (from memory, not sure if that's exactly right)...The "kerchoo" used to crack my DD up when she was a baby. I have a certain fondness for Dr. Seuss's ABC
@lady grey: The Froggy books are the worst! Whenever Froggy responds to his parents with "WHAAAAAAAT??" I change the words to "Yes sir?" "Yes ma'am?"
cantaloupe / 6171 posts
@MrsBrewer: @Pancakes: ohh hmm we have the board book version and maybe it's different? It has the line "k-k-k" in it
nectarine / 2180 posts
@nana87: haha, I had to go into my DD's room and look at the book. Yes, the board book version must be different!
nectarine / 2085 posts
@nana87: @Pancakes: Okay, I have to come to Dr. Seuss's rescue on this one! I love him. The two versions are totally different! We have both, so here is how they stack up on this all-important issue of the letter K:
Original: "BIG K little k Kitten. Kangaroo. Kick a kettle. Kite and a king's kerchoo."
Board book: "BIG K little k, what begins with K? Kangaroo and kite. K...k...K."
The board book was "adapted from" the original per the inside cover, and personally, I like it a lot less. It doesn't have the same rhyme scheme as the original, the mice in the moonlight don't mumble mighty nicely, and the Fiffer-feffer-feff has multicolored feathers. I want to know who had the balls to mess with a Dr. Seuss drawing? Sacrilege!
cantaloupe / 6171 posts
@honeybear: that's so weird that they changed it!! I understand changing it for one of the really long books--like, mil has the board book version of "Fox in Socks" and obviously that one needs to be edited down since it's soooo long--but the ABCs??? We should get the original since lo loves it! Especially the Zizzer Zazzer Zuzz for some reason, lol
pear / 1503 posts
@honeybear: Thanks for chiming in. We don't have that one (either version), and I was wondering what the deal was. Maybe I'll wait until we are no longer needing board books to buy it! I like most Seuss books.
We have two versions of Green Eggs and Ham (which I really like). One has flaps, and is annoying to read because you have to open them to read certain lines, and LO likes to play with them, so it's sometimes hard to read in order, which messes up the rhyming scheme. Actually, now that I think of it, I hate reading that version!
