Ideal is labor at home for as long as possible and deliver naturally at the hospital with no medication. My only request is that my hubby and mom are the only ones in the L&D with me.

But, I'm fully aware that I have no idea what will actually happen and I'm open to epidural (though I'm slightly afraid of the possibility of labor slowing and having to be induced with pitocin, etc.)

Medication free is what was important to me.

Healthy mommy and healthy baby. And I want to go into the experience feeling as informed as possible and confident in whatever decision I do make about pain management.

My ideal birth plan was to have mommy & baby safe.
I had three things going in: I did NOT want Nubain, I would like to try for no epidural and most importantly a open mind!
I didn't want my own desires of labor putting my baby in jeopardy whatsoever.

Labor is so unpredictable and so different for everyone. I went in with an open mind. And honestly that's what I tell every pregnant lady going in. A friend of yours could have had the most easy birth on this planet. Push for 5 minutes no tearing and can gloat that they had a med free birth. But yours can be 3hours of pushing and 3rd degree tears with an epidural. So what? As long as baby gets here safe that is ALL that matters.

My ideal birth would be to labor at home for as long as possible, then at the hospital receive meds to make it as painless as possible without stalling labor. Is that even possible? lol

I told my doctor I wanted whatever is best for baby and mommy, I would like medicine for pain management and I said no student.s (as I'm delivering at a teaching hospital)

Hmmmm, with my first I really wanted a med-free birth; with my second, I just wanted to labor as long as possible before getting the epidural. When I have another one, I think my goal will be to actually leave the hospital within 12 hours of birth; I planned that with both kids, and it didn't work out with either one.

Quick births apparently run in my family -- my birth mother has had 5 other children in addition to me, and even I (her first) came really quickly. So that would be nice! Otherwise, I do want an epidural but I want a pain management option that allows me to be as present as possible both during and after the birth, but lessens the amount of pain I'm in. I don't need to be completely pain-free. I just don't want to be high during the experience. And I want time (just me and DH) with the baby afterwards.

I'm hoping to labor at home as long as possible (we live 2 miles from the hospital). I would like to allow labor to progress naturally, as long as it is safe for baby (ie, no pitocin). I prefer no pain medication but am not totally opposed. And I want immediate skin-to-skin after delivery, for an hour, just me and Hubs.

Obviously, this is my wishlist but we will do what the doctor's think is necessary, as long as I am fully informed and give full consent.

@regberadaisy: I didn't mind, we have a lot of teaching hospitals here and I feel like they have to learn some how! I actually thought it was kind of neat being her first birth.

@sorrycharlie: Lol, now that I think about it I think before hand I would have thought that I'd say no to a student observing me. But I said that I didn't want anyone to come into the room when I was in labor other than DH, and I let my parents and inlaws in for a little bit. You just never know until it happens!

For my son, my plan was healthy baby and healthy mommy.

The next time we have one I'd like a little more say b.c all hell broke loose for NO good reason. Baby was never in distress and everyone was just being complete jerks to me. For the next time, I'm taking much more care in selecting my ob/gyn and setting the tone with that.... if someone is disrespectful or rude I am going to tell them to get the heck out (including nurses!) - as a first time mom I had no idea to stand up to people and completely got walked ALL over. And I'm one that never really gets walked over - but it's just all so overwhelming! Might get a doula to help with all that.

I hope to birth at home or in a birthing center, with the possibility of a water birth. I hope to feel safe, supported, strong, and to bond with my husband.

My ideal birth experience would be a calm, zen water birth with no meds, no intervention. Dim lights, soft music just me and my body and my baby.

I don't know if I'll be allowed to do that, but I'm going to push for it next time around. I have a rare heart disorder called Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome and I don't think I'm allowed to not be monitored.
