My daughter occasionally likes cereal in the morning. She will eat cheerios but of course likes the Banana cheerios better. Still a lot of empty carbs and sugars though for what I would prefer. Is there a better option that your kids eat?

@T.H.O.U.: What if you added sliced up banana or strawberries to regular cheerios?

I wouldn't say its better but my kids love the Chocolate Fiber One cereal and Frosted Mini Wheats!

@T.H.O.U.: My DS loves kamut. It is a puffed wheat cereal that only has one ingredient - kamut! It has been our go-to since he was about 12 mos, he ate it for snacks a lot and now he likes to sprinkle it in his soups, yogurt, etc. We also eat a lot of Nature's Path Heritage Flakes, they do have a little sugar in them but lots of whole grains and Nature's Path is a good company. Not sure if your LO would like it but DH and I go through them like nobody's business

Not exactly the same, but lo really likes oatmeal. I use plain quick oats and add a tablespoon of peanut butter and a handful of fruit or preserves.

L really liked Kix, Chex and sometimes some of Daddy's honey nut cheerios or honey bunches of oats. She likes blueberries, strawberries or pieces of banana in her cereal too.

J loves frosted mini wheats but will eat any cereal (raisin bran and apple cinnamon Cheerios are our other household favorites).

@shellio: can you only find that whole food type stores?

My LO loves frosted mini wheats. Not sure how they compare to other cereals, but that's one of many he'll eat.

@shellio: we eat that too!!! Sometimes I will toss fruit in it too.

I still haven't given DD cereal yet! What age did you ladies start offering cereal?

Cheerios. And crispix. And kashi hearts. Aaand honey bunches of oats with almonds (my fave too!)

Musli, I don't buy regular cereal. My son has musli maybe one day a week.

DS loves Granola and Quaker Oatmeal Squares. I worried they'd be too hard but he hasn't had a problem. He's 18 months old.

Kashi hearts and occasionally Life since that's what we eat sometimes. I haven't given it to I'm with milk yet though...just dry. I'm worried about the mess!

@locavore_mama: I think I've only seen kamut in Whole Foods or Natural Grocers but I don't look for it other places so it might be there! It is super cheap, maybe a couple of dollars for a huge bag even at WF.
@junebugmama: The kamut or the Heritage Flakes? I don't know why the flakes are so delicious but I snack on them all the time. If the kamut - yes, fruit sounds like a great idea! I was glad LO loved them so much because I can really feel good about giving them to him, healthy, whole, and cheap - I'll take it!!

@dolphin: pretty young. We started with Cheerios because it's small and gets mushy when wet, much like puffs. We started BLW around 7.5months so I want to say I started Cheerios around 9 months?
@shellio: thanks! Maybe I'll check Trader Joes next time we're there.

I just this week gave Maddy (2.5) cereal for the first time and she loved it! I bought an organic banana granola type (I want to say Nature's Path but I threw away the box!). She loves oatmeal, I give her Bob's Red Mill Steel Cut Oats with fruit, preserves, or brown sugar mixed in.

@dolphin: At 2 years 3 mos I have yet to offer DS an actual bowl of cereal with milk, he has had bites of ours sometimes. But I think we started giving him kamut puffs around 10-11 mos maybe, and handfuls of other types of cereal occasionally after he was 1-1.5. He eats oatmeal for breakfast almost every morning.

@locavore_mama: thanks! DD loves puffs but for some reason I never thought of giving her a bowl of cereal with milk. I'm gonna buy a box of Cheerios!
@shellio: Thanks! DD usually gets oatmeal every morning too. She's 15 months! I don't eat cereal so we never have any in the house but I'll have her try it. I'm all for easy breakfasts!

@dolphin: I've been dicing bananas into dry cheerios and serving over yogurt (kind of like a fruit and yogurt parfait) while she gets the hang of silverware a little better. She doesn't seem to dig muesli much, but she's had that too. I'm thinking of trying cereal with a little milk this week to see how she does.

@rattles: that's a good idea! DD needs to learn how to get better with utensils too!

@locavore_mama: i've been able to find them in the organic section of my regular grocery store.

@lamariniere: I've never heard of this before but am intrigued. Do the rolled oats sit in milk for a bit to soften? Are there no digestion issues eating the oats raw?
Do you use only rolled oats or quick oats too? What do you put in it?

I make a granola using this recipe:
But with no added fruit and everyone loves it.
We buy Nature's Path Heritage Flakes (and sometimes Heritage O's), and eat a lot of steel cut or large flake oatmeal. Boring family over here!

@lamariniere: I forgot about muesli! I have to make some for my son. He used to gobble it up.
@locavore_mama: I made mine by dicing banana, grating an apple and mashing some berries. I would cook the oats because I like it better that way, but I understand the traditional Swiss recipe calls for uncooked oats. I also would add in some ground nuts, my son loved hazelnuts.
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
@looch: so is it served hot or cold? Or just like a really runny oatmeal? I guess if I cook it I can technically use steel cut oats?
GOLD / papaya / 10166 posts
She loves cereal! We switch between Frosted Mini-Wheats, Quaker Oat Squares and Special K w/ strawberries. She'll eat just about any cereal we'll eat though. We also add oatmeal and yogurt to the mix.
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
@locavore_mama: it is usually served cold, the texture would be more like yogurt than oatmeal. Let me see if I can find a recipe and post equivalent measurements.
pineapple / 12566 posts
@locavore_mama: I buy it premade with all sorts of dried fruits and usually it's a blend of a few oats/grains. The stuff I find here usually looks like the oats have taken a quick spin through the food processor to chop them up slightly so it's not so hard to chew. We've never had digestion issues, but he probably didn't start eating it until he was 2. I will either serve it in plain yogurt or milk and, since my son is a slow poke, it gets soft while he's eating.
pineapple / 12566 posts
@looch: I would be curious for a recipe too! It's pretty cost effective to buy it premade here though.
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
So, I looked it up, and the original recipe was based on raw foods, so the oats were for sure not cooked. But the original recipe uses sweetened condensed milk...I've looked for a more modern interpretation.
6 T oats, finely ground, soaked in water overnight (or cooked, which is what I prefer)
180 grams plain yogurt
1 apple, peeled and grated
6 hazelnuts or almonds, finely chopped
2 T lemon juice
After you've soaked or cooked your oats, combine and refridgerate.
I make mine with a diced banana and a cup of frozen thawed berries. I like there to be more fruit than oats, and just enough yogurt to make it to a loose oatmeal.
