Public, we are struggling to do pre school for twins so they will just have to go to public.

Public. We chose our suburb because of the great public schools (my parents sent me to private because the schools we were zoned to were not good at all).

DH was homeschooled and wants the same for his kids, even though the house we're trying to buy has better county public schools than the county we currently live in.
I'm content to send them to public school but perhaps spend the first few years teaching them myself. Then give them the option of going to public school. Of course, if they went and decided they didn't like it, I would tutor them but make them stick the whole school year out. I think it's important for them to learn from their choices (not mistakes, because I grew up in public school). I don't want them to learn to quit just because something's hard or not what they thought it would be like. I want them to work through it. Then the next year, I'll give them the same option - stay home and learn with me or go to school.

Possibly montessori to start with (if we can afford it). Probably a charter school, it's technically public but smaller classes and usually a better environment.
Maybe homeschool... but now that I'm going to school for my degree I doubt I'll be doing that.

We're hopefully going to be moving before LO is ready for school, so I'm not sure yet; it depends on where we end up. But probably public.

Ideally a Friends school, which is Quakers, but we'll probably do public mainly.

I always went private, he always went public, but we chose our suburb for the public schools.

@Maysprout: I've never heard of that. What's the philosophy?
GOLD / cantaloupe / 6703 posts
We'll do public. We live in an area with good schools, plus, with my background, I can supplement her education as needed.

Public for sure. We moved to this area becaue the public schools are really good. No way am I sending them to private now! We gave up square footage to buy a house here!!

Public for sure. We have excellent public schools around here. We have a charter school that is public that would be cool to look into but I heard the waiting list is years long.

@regberadaisy: There's a famous one in DC, the Sidwell Friends school that the Obama daughters currently attend and other presidents kids have attended.
We started attending a Quaker worship and were really impressed at how social the kids were both with each other and adults. The focus is not just on education but on conflict resolution, social justice, environmental sustainability, and local to world issues with service. There is a religious element too but it seems less pushy and is more about discussion than saying this is what you must believe.

Public. We bought a house with schools in mind. Plus I know we are going to need 18 years to save as much as we can for college, the way prices keep going up and up.

if proximity & money weren't issues, a waldorf school. but since we don't live close enough to one and the tuition is out of our price range, we're looking to buy a home in one of the best school districts in our state.

It depends on the school district that we end up in. I absolutely love our current town but its only downside is the school system. It’s not terrible by any means but it’s far from great and I’m not willing to send my kid there. If we end up buying a house here, we’ll explore private school options. If we buy a house in either of the towns that are on the top of our list, public all the way. We’re not religious so Catholic is definitely out and I’m in no way qualified to home school (nor would I want to).

Public. Not sure whether it will be english or french immersion, though.

Either private or public. DH is pushing for private, I would prefer to at least try public.
pomegranate / 3414 posts
We are debating this right now, I went to public but DH went to private. We are leaning towards private at this point.

@Maysprout: i would LOVE to send kids to the friends school! but pre-k tuition starts at $21,800 and goes up to $27,950 for 8th grade, plus the music and dance tuition =( i went to an amazing independent school that i'd love to send our kids to, but again the elementary program starts at $18,300 and we just can't swing that every year for each of the kids we want.

I would love to send LO to Montessori school but I'm not sure if it's going to be financially possible.

Public – we’re big proponents of public education (through college) and we bought a home in one of the best school districts because we want LO to attend public school.

@Maysprout: We're aiming to do a Friends school as well. It's the best match with our philosophy out of the schools in the area.

@scg00387: i know, we live in a pricey state (but there are great public options here too!) =( even with financial assistance, i doubt we could make it work. the fact the DH went to a VERY wealthy, predominantly white, private school and had an awful time being a poor, scholarship black kid in that environment made him pretty pro pubic school. he doesn't want our kids to have the same experience he did. seriously though, those could be college prices, it's nuts!

Our kids will go to Catholic school, hopefuuly all the way through high school.
pineapple / 12526 posts
Private. The district our home is in is not the greatest, unfortunately, and we want to move further in to the city, which means even worse public schools.
cantaloupe / 6885 posts
Public (that's really the only option around here, lol) but I am a second grade teacher and a firm believer in the public education system...also any future LOs will go to the same school that I teach at which I think will be great (though I would never want to teach their actual class!)
pomegranate / 3809 posts
Public for sure. Private school is just out of the budget and our town is in the top 2% for school districts in the state.
wonderful olive / 19353 posts
More than likely public since the schools in our neighborhood are highly ranked. Even if they weren't, the nearby cities also have highly ranked schools. One of them just built a new stadium that cost $60 million (MILLION!!!!) that has a seating capacityof 18,000!!! Their performing arts center is also ridiculously swanky. It houses 5 cafes that are equivalent to your swanky local cafes on the streets. All in a HIGH SCHOOL. Here's a link to some pictures of their performing arts center. http://www.allenisd.org/cms/lib/TX01001197/Centricity/Domain/2320/PAC%20Photos/PAC%20Photo%20Gallery%202011.ppsx
This isn't the school our kids will be going to but just saying it's an option should we not mind driving our kids a lil way to something "nice".
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
@Maysprout: very interesting. Those are all points that I wish to address with our children. I know with the Waldorf program they offer "summer vacation courses". Do you know if the Friends school do anything similar. I would be open to something like that for a summer program!

We're building a house in an area with awesome public schools, and that's one reason we pulled the trigger!
grapefruit / 4136 posts
@mrs. bird: Holy. CRAP. That's a friggin insane price! @PrincessBaby: You already had an amazeballs house...I can only imagine what you're building! Want to adopt me? Between you and @shopaholic I'm going to be the best adopted adult EVER.
We'll go with public schools, where we live it's rare to even find private schools and if you do they're crazy expensive and that's just not realistic for us.
cantaloupe / 6610 posts
@babyjmama: lol! Our current house is okay, but we're moving to Charleston SC (whoop whoop! I kind of hate SoFlo!) and we're building there:).
