So my goal for 2013 (not calling it a resolution. lol), is to work on becoming better at cleaning and organizing. It's really where I fall short.
What do you do to motivate yourself to clean/organize? Any tips or tricks?

Visitors! Haha, that's the only way I really clean clean. Maybe host a running dinner or book club or something every other week.

Ditto! Having guests on their way makes me SUPER productive cleaning in no time!
Other than that, I HATE seeing my own long hair shedding all over the place, so I vacuum with a small cordless vac at least every other day! Keeps the floor upkeep much easier to maintain!
I also wipe down the sink vanities all the time when I'm in the restrooms. I've learned that a little bit of daily maintenance here and there really cut down on major cleaning days.

When my parents came over. I hated hearing how our place wasn't clean enough, and then my mom would start cleaning. Now that we live with them for now, I clean because I am not working much so I need to contribute somehow. I am much more organized since we had our son because I have to be. DH and I are working on getting a house of our own, so I am hoping we can continue to stay organized.

Yep, visitors!
I've become better at cleaning since LO was born though.

Company!
The only time I am truly motivated to clean is if people are coming over.

Well, I am in the exact same boat as everyone else! For a long time I had a standing weekly date with a friend-- one week her house, one week mine so everything was done at least every other week. Hitting the big stuff every other week (bathrooms, floors, dusting) and filling in with general tidying in between kept us in decent shape.
I read somewhere (fly lady maybe) that a good goal is to aim for 20 minutes away from company ready on a day to day basis. When I was between jobs (read: not working 90% of the time) the Fly Lady system worked really well for me so maybe check that out.

Company! We live in the same town as our families, so there is always the threat of an unannounced visit by my mom or MIL and I'd hate for them to see my house dirty haha.

Visitors for sure!
Otherwise, I need to work on this too. It's one of my goals for 2013 as well

@dagret: lol! Great tip!
I try not to put a clean house above spending lots of quality time with DD. I end up cleaning 1)when we have visitors and 2)when I get sick of the mess. And when I leave a room, I try to take one thing out that belongs in another room.

me too: company coming over
also, I have a neighbour that walks with me many days, and I know she might come in the door any given day.......and when i was at work, she used to walk our dog, so I'd clean because she was coming in!

Having company is the only thing that helps me. I tried watching hoarders, it didn't work. lol

Motivation: hardwood floors that collect dust bunnies
Tips: focus on what you do well and take ownership of that task. DH hates the way I sweep, so he is on floor duty...sweeps the hardwood and steams the travertine. I love when reflective surfaces sparkle like the bathroom mirror or the glass kitchen table.
Tip: use realsimple.com and marthastewart.com for their cleaning lists- what to do, supplies to get

If we are expecting someone...I usually keep things half way decent though, but there are days when I fall behind.

Visitors are the best motivator! My best actual tip is to do one chore a day, Monday through Friday (or whatever days are best for you). I wrote out my little cleaning schedule and put it on the fridge to remind myself.

Now that LO is into everything I like the house to be clean so she doesn't get into all of my crap. Everything always has to be put away or she'll get into it.

People coming over! I swear that's the only time I clean clean, I tidy up when it's just looking gross in here haha

It just gets to a point where I need to clean.
I don't really mind cleaning, but I prefer if DH is gone. It just makes it easier, not that he would ever prevent me from cleaning, but if I'm cleaning the kitchen and he's walking through, making a sandwich or whatever, it just gets frustrating. Or if I mop and he walks through it... yeah...

When it finally gets dirty enough to bother me and I'm not too lazy to do it. Or having people over.

Keeping my husband from cleaning and losing my stuff! Plus, a cluttered house really stresses out my husband, and I want him to feel relaxed at home since he works so much.
A cleaner, more organized house is one of my goals for staying home with kids... a very slow work in progress!

Watching hgtv shows and looking at Pinterest boards with immaculate homes and coming home after a long day at work to a clean home are my 2 motivations. Being more organized is one of my top resolutions this year, too!!!!

I like to chat while I clean. It's like I need my mind off of what I'm doing b/c I hate it so much.

As pps, having company over. We had friends visit this afternoon and we cleaned like crazy. I didn't want to bc we have our cleaning lady coming tomorrow! Lol

When I get mad or upset, I tend to clean a lot. Lol. But that doesn't happen very often. The only other thing is having people over!
