This will be DD's first summer walking (she'll be 2). What kind of shoes do you like for your toddler? Are there sandals that don't trip them up? Other suggestions besides sneakers?

Saltwaters are always a summer staple. White and silver are must haves. Mini Melissa's - zig zags, cats, ballets. At that age, we wore Crocs a lot too

My kids both wore leather Bobux sandals or jandals and my wee guy has a pair of neoprene Adidas sandals that he wears a lot.

Natives. They are the best and well worth the money. Plus we have used them for multiple kids. They are so much better than crocs.

We also love the Old Navy jellies (they run a tad small) and tiny Tom's. DD had a pair of Sperry boat shoes we liked so I bought another pair this year. We're also trying Saltwater sandals for the first time but those will be mostly for dress outfits.

We loved salt waters and natives. Get them used if you can. I found keens got stinky.

We just bought these on the recommendation of a friend whose lo has been wearing them for the last 2 summers. She said that they hold up well, dry fast when wet and don't smell. She said closed toe is a must. I got them for an additional 30% off and free shipping with my kohls card making them about $13. Can't beat the price.

Once she was a confident walker we used crocs for pulling on to play around the house. She still always wears sneakers for hiking, playground, walking anywhere, etc. I like her toe to be covered. We tried keens last summer but she didn't like them.

I really want to get DS a pair of Natives but not sure I can justify the cost, ugh!
He has a pair of closed toe Stride Rite sandals, which are cute and very comfy but STINKY! Also, it always gets sand and dirt in it, so his feet are black.
We're in Florida so it's sandal weather year round. I usually just leave him in his regular socks and shoes for running/walking.
He has closed toe water shoes from Target for pool/beach.

Saltwater sandals and jelly shoes for school since she needs closed toes.

My kids always preferred the Old Navy Native knock offs, as opposed to the $$ Natives. Not sure why, but it works for me.

Natives, Keens, and Saltwaters. We've had See Kai Run sandals but they haven't held up as well as those other brands.

NATIVES
All she wore last summer (she was like 16-20 months). I just ordered new ones for her this summer.
@MrsADS: I hunt for deals as soon as I'm confident about what size she will be in the summer. I just got a coupon in the mail for DSW ($20 off $49+) so I got her Natives shoes & rainboots that came out to $20 each. Last year I got an amazing Zappos coupon and used that.

@snowjewelz @lbee and all you other Natives people - I worry they wouldn't fit well on my LO's feet without a velcro strap or something? They look like they would either just slide off or be too tight?

Keens. I can't stand the flimsy, non supportive stuff I often see girls running around in - I think it discourages activity and starts the messaging that girls should look pretty, while boys get to run around and have fun. My daughters exclusively wear rugged, comfortable shoes.

I did those keens knockoffs, the ones with closed toes. My son really needs to be wearing socks, his feet get sweaty, lol, and there was no way he would tolerate something like flip flops, even with a back strap. I only recently introduced crocs, but those are more for house shoes.

DD spent her entire first walking summer in a cute pair of Saucony velcro shoes (guess you'd call them tennis shoes?) We'll probably get something similar this year since they were the only thing that really stayed on her feet on the playground.

We do natives and saltwaters too, both are 30% off on diapers.com right now, shipping is free at $50.
@MrsADS: I'm impressed at how well they stay on whole still being easy to put on, I think it's because the shoe comes almost clear up to the shin if that makes sense.

@MrsADS: I really can't describe it. I was super side eyeing the cost and them being that great last summer. Now I'm a changed lady... I considered a pair for myself!

Just looked up Natives from this post and LOVE the look of them!
But daycare doenst allow crocs. Should I assume no natives either (because of the holes)?

@wrkbrk: they might not like crocs because of the strap in the back. I would definitely ask about the Natives.
pomelo / 5791 posts
@wrkbrk: Our school doesn't allow either, because of the playground being made of mulch (and mulch getting in the shoes).

@wrkbrk: Our school doesn't allow Crocs (don't have a back) but allows Natives. His feet get disgusting on the playground, though.

@LBee: So do you do athletic shoes and socks all summer? Sounds so hot! Maybe kids just dont mind.
