For DD's first birthday we're expecting 25 adults and 15 kids between the ages 1-5. I'm deciding between a 10" round cake (3 layers) which they say serves about 25 people or and 12" round cake that serves around 35 people. In the past I've always gone with the 12" round but I always end up having a ton of cake leftover. This time I'm leaning towards the smaller one but then I'm worried it won't be enough. What size cake would you go with?

Also, do you know the trick of cutting the circle in the middle to get more slices?

@Charm54: That's actually what I'm trying to avoid...I'm not a sweets person so I don't want to be stuck with all the cake!

@dolphin: I voted 12" but that's based on me loving leftover cake! Is there a big price difference? Will you have other desserts? Maybe you could send leftovers home with guests?

I'd get 12" to be safe and if you end up with tons of leftovers bring them to work for people to scarf.

I was between cake sizes and the bakery suggested get the smaller and supplement with a different flavor cupcakes. This is what I did -- still had a few pieces (4 small) of cake left and a few cupcakes!

I'd get the smaller one and just cut into smaller pieces, and have some other options like fruit for people.

@Foodnerd81: it's a $30 difference. So not huge but enough where I can use difference to get cookies or something.

@dolphin: oh for that much I would do the smaller cake and add cookies like you suggest. And cut small pieces.

Depends on the time of day - if you're doing a morning party, but not serving lunch, I'd go smaller..I feel like many adults won't want cake or won't want their kids to eat cake before lunch, so will eat very little. If you're serving it after a meal or in the middle of the afternoon (won't interfere with dinner time), I'd expect more people to have a piece, let their kids have a full piece/seconds, etc., and order the bigger cake.

@PinkElephant: the party is from 10-12 and I'm serving brunch type food. So after a meal but still on the early side.

I just had a party for about 30 people and only got an 8" double layer round. I still ended up with about half a cake. I did have ice cream too and lots of other desserts but I had a ton left over of everything.

@dolphin: My favorite trick. And people still get good portion sizes and they seem to waste less.
