I'm scheduled to start my progesterone injections Wednesday. The needle the pharmacy sent me is 1 1/2 inches long. I'm debating whether I should call and ask for a 1 inch needle.

@Leialou: I dont know about length...but the shots with the bigger needles tend to hurt me less when I get them done in the office. I usually request the 18 gauge. It hurts a little more going in but it is so much faster with the thick oil.

I think they have to use the longer needle because they have to be injected into the muscle. As for gauge I agree with @Mrs. Lion: 18 gauge.

Ok, thanks guys. I've got a 22 1/2 gauge. I'm just nervous because I've never done an intramuscular injection before. I figure it's going to hurt, but if I can make it a little easier on myself why not?

@Leialou: I do mine at home. I have 2 different needles, a 20 gauge 1 inch needle to draw the meds out of the vile and then an 18 gauge 1.5 inch needle to inject with. I would definitely ask!

I started my delestrogen shots which are IM last night and the needle I got were 1.5 inches! I was shocked the needle was so long. I thought the needle was going to hit my bone! But my shot was fine. I'm thinking that maybe they need to needle long enough to reach the muscle in the butt area.

@Leialou: the needle I have is 22gauge and 1.5 long. The black (or dark grey) hub.
I was given an 18 gauge (pink) to withdraw it.

For PIO and Delestrogen i use a 1.5" 18g needle to withdraw meds then switch to 1.5" 22g needle to inject. The needle is much, much, much scarier looking than it ends up being- I would stress myself out about it every time but then would barely feel a sharp little pinch when it went in. Good luck!!!! In the end, all of this will be worth it!

@Leialou: I actually asked my clinic once about using a thinner gauge needle, and they said no, I had to use the bigger one for the oil to push through properly. Plus it just works better when I can do it faster. Although I might have cheated once when I was having a lot of nerve pain and used one of my extra smaller gauge needles!

@Leialou: one more thing...my nurse found this numbing cream that is safe for pregnancy and it helps so much! Maybe ask your doctor about it! If I put it on an hour before the shot I don't even feel the needle. The oil still burns a little but not nearly as much as it did without it! It's called Lidocaine and Prilocaine Cream
