We have a big sectional but we did a HUGE rug. We like that the couch sits on the rug and LO has plenty of room to play. For us bigger was better.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: your dining table is about the size of ours and we have a 6'x9' rug under it. It looks fine, and it's plenty big enough on the sides that all the chair legs stay on the rug when people are sitting in them. It's too short for that on the ends, though -- the chair legs are all on when the chairs are pushed in, but the back two legs are off the rug when people are sitting there. It's kind of irritating, but not enough to make us up the size to a bigger rug (which wouldn't really fit in our dining alcove anyway. So I think you're fine to go with that size, just be forewarned.

Regarding the living room, I'd either go for the rug that tucks nicely into the sectional's "L" or a really huge one that could accommodate the entire sofa. I wouldn't choose something in between, I think it would look awkward.
