What to ask Ob/Gyn about long TTC process?

@psw27: I asked questions, as best as I could, last year at this time. There was no pre-TTC testing. I didn't have any indication of needing any so I don't think it's "standard." We talked about what to do pre-TTC which is/was basically prenatals. I suppose if you're overweight or unhealthy in some way, that may be addressed too.

@psw27: I remember telling my general doctor that my husband and I were going to start trying to have a baby. There were several shots that she scheduled for us to get - the only one I really remember was one for whooping cough. It was also helpful for me to have that "marker" on my chart because then insurance could see that it had been a year since we started to TTC. They wouldn't insure me unless we had been trying for a year and it was documented.

@LindsayInNY: I think you're doing the right thing, going in prepared. It's the best course of action. You are your best advocate for your health. You'll know if she's going to be the doctor to help you work through this next stage. That's great news about your insurance!

Thanks ladies, it makes me nervous for some reason even though my ob/gyn is fantastic + has been asking when me and my DH are going to have kids for the last 2 years!

@LindsayinNY: I had to give myself this kind of pep talk, too. I was worried they would see me as being uptight for asking about things earlier than a year. But then I looked at my well worn copy of "Taking Charge of Your Fertility," and I decided that was just what I was going to do--take charge! I still felt bumbly and nervous, but just taking the first step is huge.

    Good luck!

@LindsayInNY: For what it's worth, I think a lot of doctors are reluctant to say much until you have been trying for a while (which, you guys definitely have). Annoyingly, for New York you are still "young," but that doesn't mean you shouldn't be concerned. Hopefully now that she knows you have been trying she will be a bit more helpful. And yes, definitely look around for other doctors if you don't feel like she is being respectful/taking your concerns seriously.

I set up an apt with my doc after we had been TTC for about 7/8 months and I actually got pregnant the week after!

@Happygal: That's exactly it, I'm giving myself a pep talk now, LOL! I don't care if she thinks I'm "too young" or have "plenty of time," it's the right time for us! I'm already trying all sorts of crazy things so what's there to be ashamed about?!

@meredithNYC: That's exactly it - I'm "New York young." But that shouldn't make a difference if we're/I'm ready. So I'm really hoping it doesn't...

    Update!!

So, of course, I worried for almost nothing! I did shed some tears like a moron though. I'm not a good liar so I told her we started trying in December (the truth) and told her everything we've been trying. She didn't dismiss any of it as crazy either. As specter, we're giving things until December. If nothing by then, she'll run all the tests. In the meantime, she recommended acupuncture and massage if I'm interested. She also gave me the name od an OTC drug called Pregnitude - it's folic acid and another drug. Anyone heard of it? She also prescribed progesterone to help the pre-AF spotting/discharge. But wasn't xonxrned about cycle length or later O or anything. Only downside was the five pounds I've gained... And she only made one or two young comments! No pregnancy test though so as of now I'm still on for Saturday unless AF shows up.

Thank you everyone!! I seriously all of you.

    @LindsayInNY: great update!
if you haven't tried the acupuncture before, I seriously recommend it. After 3 years of.wonky/nonexistent cycles and NTNP, I had one acupuncture treatment and was preggo a week later.
I'm a strong acupuncture advocate! plus it's way cheaper than all the testing/meds etc.....

@LindsayInNY: Glad it went well. I'm doing accupunture, too. Although not really for fertility anymore because we are on a TTC break. My Acupunturist does specialize in Fertilty and has said patients have gotten pregnant. Accupunture really relaxes me, reduced my anxiety when I was TTC and she's treating some of my health problems (minor) without the use of meds.

There's actually a lot of research coming out about how accupunture can help Fertilty. Here is a good website on accupunture. http://americanpregnancy.org/infertility/acupuncture.htm

    @LindsayInNY:
Acupuncture has a reputation for regulating cycles and reducing stress (I've copied and pasted some info below)

I actually went because of chronic backpain. I had tried chiropractor, orthopedic treatment, massage and physical therapy. While I was there I also shared with the acupuncturist that I hadn't had a regular cycle since I stopped my BCP. For me, AF hadn't appeared at all in the 7 months that I had been officially off BCP.

After my acupuncture treatment, I started feeling "funny". I thought I was really sick, but it turns out I was actually pregnant. Since I hadn't seen AF in almost 8 months, I was freaking out..I had no clue when I had conceived or how far along I was. When I had the dating ultrasound, it confirmed that I conceived the week of the acupuncture. We weren't TTC so it was a big shock for us.

So thats my anecdotal reason I feel like acupuncture is worth a shot. My treatment was only $50.

Totally understand if it sounds too "new age" for you, but I'm become a believer so wanted to share with you, in case you want to give it a shot before meeting with an RE.

    ------
According to traditional Chinese medicine, the human body has a life force, or energy called chi, which travels through the body along meridians. In this tradition, acupuncture needles stimulate certain points below the skin to help unblock and regulate the flow of chi and, thus, aid in healing.

Chinese culture has used acupuncture for thousands of years to improve fertility. Acupuncture proponents claim the female body has various points related to fertility, mostly associated with the kidney, liver and heart.

Most Western doctors don't subscribe to the notion of meridians and chi. Indeed, the medical literature is rife with letters to the editor calling the practice of acupuncture with IVF ridiculous and frivolous.

Some doctors, however, have hypothesized that acupuncture may reduce stress and increase blood flow to the uterus, which could, in turn, increase the chances of getting pregnant.

@LindsayInNY: So glad to hear things went well As for all of the prescriptions and recommendations - I'd definitely ease into it. I haven't heard of pregnitude, but progesterone is what I was on after my IUI procedures. I used to have spotting a few days before my period too, once I got off BCP. But my doctor never seemed concerned about it.

Having a plan is always nice - enjoy TTC until December and I hope BIG time that you get your BFP soon

So glad to hear your appointment went well. And FX that you get your BFP this cycle, so you don't even have to worry about waiting it out to December.

I'm an advocate for acupuncture too though. After doing it for the first month this summer, FF gave me dotted crosshairs for the first time ever. This was before I started Clomid, and didn't do anything differently than start acupuncture, so I really do believe it's been helping to regulate my cycles. I'd never seen a true temp shift before going. Plus, once you get over the fear of needles (which really don't hurt at all), it's very relaxing, something that definitely can't hurt to combat TTC stress!

@LindsayInNY: good update! never heard of pregnitude - sounds interesting! i did acupuncture -- i'm not sure if it helped or not - but it was relaxing, so I'm sure that was a benefit so I wasn't stressing too much!

hoping your AF doesn't show anyway, but if it does sounds like you have a good plan!

@bluestriped bee: @wheres_c: I think I might consider acupuncture after December if we're still in the TTC phase then. Can't hurt to try!

@sweetooth: I definitely want to ease into things... I'm thinking the progesterone RX next cycle and going from there. I don't want to go completely insane in the process or overly obsess (hah!).

@pui: @doxielove: I think I'm going to give things a shot until December before considering acupuncture. I'm not against it or anything, just want to give things some time first.

@Littlebit: I blamed the crying on possible PMS Surprisingly, it's the first time I've cried during the whole TTC process!

@Sprite: I hope I don't have to worry about December but the way things have been going, LOL... But it's still helpful to know there's a "next step" in place!

@LindsayInNY: I just wanted to chime in and say that it took my DH and I twelve months to get our BFP and we had no known fertility issues. I was having longer cycles of 31-33 days and usually ovulated on cd 20-21 so my LP was around the twelve day mark. Is your DH taking any sort of multivitamin and looking after his swimmers?

Hang in there and fingers crossed for you!!

  37. LindsayInNY

    bananas / 9229 posts

@Kemma: DH is taking a multivitamin and fish oil daily. Taking care of himself otherwise, as far as I know. I'm hoping it's just taking some time and there's nothing else to it. I definitely gets frustrating and discouraging after a certain point though. =/
