We let our son decide. He calls my MIL what she absolutely hates (grandma equivalent in another language), and I find it hilarious, lol.

I have the first of my parent's grandchildren and they decided what they wanted to be called. The sign is a cute idea.... but you never know what they want.

Pleeasse, whatever you do..don't let your LO decide it for them! If they do, then all of your future children, your siblings children, etc have to call them that name.

My cousin did this. So now my son has to call my grandma (his great grandma) GiGiMa.. (gee-gee-mah). .... because the baby got to pick it, which obviously he couldn't pronounce great grandma, so now he'll have to call her that when he's in his 30's still, and so does every grandkid that follows. Uhg.

I say you could pick. You can't go wrong with any of the normal names. Grandma, Granny, Nana, etc.

My parents and ILs choose what they wanted to be called.

My MIL and FIL already had six grandchildren and were referred to as "grandma" and "grandpa", so we kept that the same. We chose other names for my own parents.

I think usually grandparents choose. My mom is being a giant PITA about this. I grew up with all of my grandparents being Grandma or Grandpa. But she thinks Grandma sounds too old *rolls eyes*. And her mother is still alive and is "Grandma".

So she wants to be similar to the french word for grandma and be Mimi. I flat out told her she can't be called that because it practically sounds like Mommy. She was trying to enlist people at my SHOWER to be on her side and to tell me that mimi sounds nothing like mommy.

My mom has always said that she would want to be nana (her mom is my "nana" her grandmother was her nana). My MIL and FIL already have grandsons so they are already grandma and pops. My dad has kind of become grandpa by default, but I haven't heard him suggesting anything else

I feel like my mom should (and is) be called what I called her mom. So she's meme. Likewise, my dad would be what I called his dad, which is grandpa. The same thing happened with my IL's. they are nonna and papa. As for my husbands nonna, the grand kids refer to her as big nonna.

@PEAPIE: DH's parents are Nanny and Poppy but his mom has some things around that say Grandma. They're just more common and easy to find..... maybe you can make the sign anyway and if they don't go by it it's not the end of the world to have something that says another name.

I was the first born on my mom's side but each of my cousins call our grandma something different. "Grams", "Grandmom", "Ma!" etc by far my favorite is my cousin Olivia who named her grandmoms after their hair color so "Orange Grandma" and Black Grandma". I was the only one who really got to know my great grandmother and i guess as a little kid i only sort of got the concept that she was my grandmother's mom so in my mind she was "Big Grandmom" I'm sure she loved that...lol

My MIL was a tad annoying with it. She had an idea of what she wanted my FIL to be called, but he wanted to be called Pop-Pop. she wants him to be called Pops which is my dad. She also changes what she wants to be called all the time! So frustrating!

My mom insists that "Grandma" sounds too old. She wants to be called "GiGi", which I think sounds very cute. Other than that, no one has seemed to mention anything or care, so the rest will be grandma & grandpa.

Both sides picked what they wanted to be called when our siblings had children. We were the last to have a child, so it was already set. We have Nana, Mema and Papa.

We let them choose. My parents wanted to be Grandma and Grandpa. His parents (Jewish) I thought would want to be Bubbe and Zadie but my FIL doesn't like Zadie for some reason. So, it's Bubbe and Grand Dad. As long as they are happy with them then it's all good!

(I will say, if one set wanted to be Mee Maw and Paw Paw I probably would have put my foot down. I am just REALLY not a fan of those names.)

My inlaws decided to be called grandma and grandpa.

My mom wanted to be called grandma, too. At 22 months, Chloe pronounces it "ga-ma" with a strong emphasis on the "ma" part. It's kind of cute

My dad.. He said he'd let Chloe call her whatever she picks. We wanted him to be a nono, but he got upset & said that's who his dad was (my nono passed away 4 years ago). We've been calling my dad pappy, but that hasn't picked up. Chloe calls my dad by his first name (!!!!) and we can't break the habit. She must have overheard my mom call my dad by his name, and it stuck. Cute but not appropriate.
