We don't plan on using the fireplace and I hate the color its painted. It's a rental, so nothing too drastic. I definitely want to paint, but how do I cover up the fireplace door? I was thinking of trying to make extra seating by adding cushions perhaps. Thoughts?

I'd paint the brick white and spray paint the fireplace black or dark brown. I think cushions for seating with pillows would be cute!!

I would paint the brick white, paint the fireplace black, and then take out the screen and put pillar candles (even better, the battery operated ones) inside the fireplace. Then, super cute and bright cushions and pillows on the hearth/bench thing (whatever it's called) ;).

You could spray paint the fireplace with this http://www.rustoleum.com/product-catalog/consumer-brands/specialty/high-heat-spray/
It's what we used and its held up well! I also like the candles idea!
Eta- never mind, I just re-read that you won't be using the fireplace

I would def check with the landlord before painting anything! I'm actually about to paint my brick fireplace white, I love that look. And if you aren't going to use that fireplace I would buy a really cool decorative screen and/or pillows to put in front of it!

@turquoisemama: I agree with PP's, I would paint it white, and the gold black, or just get rid of it all together. To me, candles in the fireplace looks a bit dated. I would add some birch logs, or something fun!
Then add either pillows... or pillar candles around, and add a mantle with some great art or pretties.

Agree paint it white. Not sure about painting the gold since it's a rental. You may not want to do that. I have a large candle screen in front of mine.

@simplyfelicity: We have a grayish couch, grey and white curtains and white coffee table and entertainment center. I'd take a picture, but it's a mess!
I'm going for white! Here it is half done. I don't think I'm going to do anything with the actual fireplace at the moment since it's a rental. Maybe I'll throw a couple of plants in front of it.

Is it wide enough to sit on comfortably?
If not, I'd just make it a plant ledge and put a bunch of plants in front of the fireplace door.
