Can you paint the tile? It’s such a dark color it might be hard, but if tile can be painted effectively, I would paint them white, and then paint the walls a pale/light blue.

Another idea would be to leave the pink tile, but paint the burgandy top/strip of the tile the same color as the dark color in the rug - tie everything together that way.

I would also get a new, white door. I mean this in the nicest way possible, but that door has got.to.go!!

I have that same kind of tile in my bathroom, but (thankfully!) the original 1967 owners chose white, not pink. We also had those same kind of doors and we painted them white, which made a HUGE difference. I think in general I would just go light light light on everything to keep it bright in there.

ETA: I agree with @BakerBee: about the walls... I think I'd just paint them white.

I'd paint the walls a very light blue and have a big mirror over the sink.

@loveisstrange: My house was built in 1930, and we have those same awful doors!! We've been replacing them one at a time. When we redid our son's nursery, he got a new door. When we redid our downstairs bathroom, it got a new door. We also replaced the one separating our living room from the front sunroom with a 12-pane glass door, but we got a great deal on that one. We still have two bedrooms, a bathroom, the laundry room, and the basement doors to replace. siiigh.

I agree with the idea to paint the walls a light gray. I think that would look really nice. I'd also look into seeing if it were possible to remove only the darker tiles, but I imagine that would be too difficult without damaging the rest of the tile/wall.

@loveisstrange: I'd just be more worried about what's behind them. Like @sunshineandsushi said, they often have that wire behind it.

I think you have to embrace the burgundy and pink until it can be replaced. I sympathize. I had pea-soup (!) green (!!) carpet (!!!) in my bedroom as a pre-teen and teenager and the only way to not feel depressed about life when I was in that space was to find a duvet with a big tropical floral print that incorporated the hideous color and made it look like someone picked that carpet on purpose. I've never been a floral print fan.

If you're getting accessories/fixtures/a mirror, I'd go with things that have a warm brass/gold-colored metal. A slightly pink white on the walls would be good. I'd also paint the doors and try to find some funky vintage door handles.

@loveisstrange: I would paint the pink tile.. I think Rust-Oleum has a tub/tile epoxy paint that works for washrooms. I have seen it done on a few of the blogs I follow. It shouldn't break the bank. I know it is a bitch to apply but it would get rid of the pink/burgundy issue.

If that is a no-go for you, I like the pics that @.twist.: posted.

Also, pending how much of a DIY'r you are .. there are easy ways to make that kind of door look like a panel door. When painted white - you couldn't tell.

@honeybear: I'm glad someone likes pink bathrooms. Maybe they'll want to buy all of my pink tile, toilet, and sink when I *rip them out*.

For yours I like white walls with pictures on the wall that incorporate the color of the trim tile. We'll be gut renovating 2 of our 1950's bathrooms next summer. There's just no way around it in our case.

I think you should totally embrace the vintage vibe!! I like the items you've picked so far. I did a search for "vintage pink bathroom" on Pinterest, and found these ideas below. I think it could be really cute and fun! If anything, maybe you could just paint the burgundy trim tile black. That would be super cheap and a LOT less work, and probably make a big impact.
