Have fun! As a NYC-centric lady in my 30's, here are some things I wear when I go out:

Skinny jeans with booties, heels or wedges with a nice top - if you're going to dinner, I'd suggest layering with a long sweater maybe
Skirt or dress with black opaque tights/boots (booties or knee-length) Example, the other night I wore a gray sweater dress that hit right above the knee, with black tights and gray suede booties (sorry, don't have pics!)
Since it's cold I have to cover up in a coat so I make sure it's a fun one - maybe add a great scarf to dress it up more/make it pop.

when I go out in NYC as a 29 year old in the winter, I usually wear skinny jeans, boots (mine are flat riding boots but they look nice!), and either a nice sweater or blouse. usually dark colors. or, black or navy tights, boots, and an above knee, fun dress. either way, i usually accessorize with either big earrings or a big/long necklace, and wear a coat and scarf.

i should say though, i go out to pretty chill places--restaurants or bars (from dives to more upscale cocktail-y places). i don't go to clubs or places that require more fanciness. yelp, open table, and zagat have good info on dress codes for restaurants--what i described is more "casual elegant" or "business casual"--I wear nicer dresses if it says the restaurant is dressy, but i still usually wear boots with them

@fancyfunction: I second the skinny jeans with booties and a nice top plus a cute coat.

oh, and pictures (I love pictures too!). These obviously skew towards my personal style but this is what I would wear if I weren't still 20 lbs over my pre pregnancy weight and could wear some of the clothes in my closet, hehe.

@looch: last year, I bought some leggings by the same company because I prefer to wear socks with boots, so I wear the leggings, socks and boots over---they held up okay, but I didn't always air dry them...they would always sneak into the drier with other stuff so they got a little more pilly than I would have liked--but that could be my fault.

HOWEVER, I also randomly saw some of a cheap brand (can't remember what brand) at Bed Bath and Beyond for only $10 a pair last year on a display case and bought 4 pair and I wear those constantly, even under pants on really cold days. The only bad thing about them is they are kind of low-rise tights which is really annoying now that I am fatter because I have to keep pulling them up or they make an unflattering line at my hip.

@travellingbee: If you're going for a more glam look, def start with a LBD and accessorize. Maybe even do a shoe in a fun color. I have a pair of suede fuschia pumps and a silver/yellow pump from J. Crew that I love to pair with black dresses and tights.

@MrsKoala: @fancyfunction: @Smurfette: Another vote for @MrsKoala:'s ensemble! Because it's NYC, and you don't want to unknowingly limit your options by your attire, definitely err on the side of more dressed up.
