My DD is 8 months old, has 4 teeth. She's still working on the top two, they broke through the gums at least, it was sad, she was not happy. When did you start brushing your lo's teeth and what toothpaste do you recommend? I'm a little concerned about how much toothpaste she'll swallow. Once you started brushing lo's teeth, did you do it in the morning and at night, or just at night?

We used oral B training tooth gel until 1, then just a tiny bit of regular kids fluoride paste (like a grain of rice, per our dentist). We typically just brushed at night at that age.

We do not have fluoridated water so we use a kids toothpaste with fluoride. Our dentist and pediatrician say to use as much as a grain of rice and it's fine for them to swallow it. It's easier than doing fluoride drops.

We didn't use an actual brush and toothpaste till 1 year. Prior to that my ped said to just wipe his teeth before bed with tooth wipes (Dr Brown makes some) or a wet washcloth.
1-2years we used fluoride free orajel training toothpaste. Night time only. I had a round baby brush that was amazing because even if he just chewed on it, it had 360 degrees of bristles so it still brushed him. It was very easy to use. I think it was by Baby Buddy, the same brand of that Baby Banana Brush teether I told you about.
Starting at 2 we used a regular kids toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste - honestly I just buy whatever brand has a character he likes - colgate or crest. Our dentist also said that as long as you use a small amount it doesn't matter what they swallow. She said pea sized is fine, I usually do 1/2 a pea to pea sized.

We use the Oragel fluoride-free toothpaste. We didn't really put much though into it and just bought it because it had Elmo on the tube

@snowjewelz: Me too! I really liked the Jack and Jill toothpaste. We only just stopped using it, at 4 - once DS could reliably spit out fluoride toothpaste.

Tom's of Maine kids strawberry toothpaste. Our dentist said not to worry about using a fluoridated paste until she's older. She's 2.5. Our water does have fluoride.
[eta] I just ordered a new tube for her this morning and didn't even realize until I checked just now; the new one has fluoride - despite looking identical to the old tube that was fluoride-free. Oh well, we only use a grain-of-rice sized amount so I won't worry if she's swallowing that.

@Sweetiepie: I've been wiping her terth/gums with a wet washcloth before bed, that's what my mom always said to do, so good to know. I'll hold off on the brush and toothpaste until she"s one, thanks for all the info.

@PawPrints: @Ina85: I use this toothpaste for my 2 year old. (It smells delicious!). I think it is sugar and sweetener free and that appealed to me. I asked the dentist at my appointment and was told we could just use that kind and we could just use water up until 1-1.5. I didn't realize they may have changed their formula-now I'll have to check my new tube too.

Before 1, it was at night. After 1, we started trying after every meal (2x a day) but was ok with 2x a day. We noticed his teeth yellowing ever-so-slightly and I didn't want that starting too early! We also feed milk sometimes in MOTN even now at 20 months so we have to counteract that somehow... -
At that age we just did water and only at night during bath time.
I have a couple fluoride free toothpastes and DS hates them, we still mostly just water, he's 4.5. Our dentist was fine with this as long as he is brushing & flossing.

We just use water at 2.5. No cavities and 2 dentist appointments.
