@mrs. wagon: I have never had an issue with hot pans and our quartz, and we are in the kitchen all the time. I definitely use trivets most of the time I'm placing something on the counter, but I have forgotten one or needed to set something down quickly a few times and they still look brand new.

@lauraeabel: I've heard that some quartz is less durable than others depending on manufacturer, so most likely those stories are from people with not as good quality quartz! Great to hear all these great experiences with quartz because I'm afraid I won't find a slab I like
I've also heard some stories about hurting granite!! So yes, trivets and something under electric skillets and slow cookers, which I did not know before all this research!

We have a dark granite, I LOVE it, we are hard on our kitchen. Two boys and lots of cooking = needing durable stuff!

@Silva: It is mainly the color - they are black with white/light gray swirls in them. The color would not have been my first choice although I have to admit that they work well in my kitchen. They also scratch or chip fairly easily when metal items are on them. They aren't hard to clean although a couple of items have left stains on them (liquid rings, sorry I don't remember which liquids!).
