Can you see the window treatments that much from the outside? I'm more concerned with how things look inside. So I feel like if you did all the same- whatever it was- upstairs and then the same downstairs it would look ok from outside? For example all cellular blinds upstairs and all drapes down, you know?
That said plantation shutters do always look nice!

@Foodnerd81: no. There are two windows per room. So different things wouldn't matter. But we want it to look good outside!

We have a fairly similar house with plantation shutters and I don't think it adds anything to the outside. I do like the look inside but I hate that they're not very light blocking. I miss our light blocking shades from our old house. But I can't bring myself to replace the wood shutters since they were probably expensive.

@ShootingStar: I hate when you get something expensive that you just don't like. For us, the sellers just replaced the carpet on the stairs and hallway- but we hate it. But I really don't feel like spending a lot to replace it since its new. So wasteful.
I am thinking of doing faux wood blinds (which supposedly are very good at blocking light) with lighter airy curtains hung high and wide to make our smallish Windows look bigger. Because I want to live in the house of Young House Love (which is also where I found C's name). For the upstairs rooms.

Maybe plantation downstairs across all 4
Faux wood upstairs (white) in what I'm assuming are bedrooms with a light gauzy curtain (heyyyyy ikea) hung high and wide . Though if it were my dream, hunter Douglass blackout pull downs in all bedrooms. Life changing.

@Foodnerd81: They actually came with our house, so I'm not sure what they cost, but I think they're real wood so they must be expensive (but no where near as good at blocking light as our old cellular shades). There's a few things about this house I feel the same way about - certain things are good quality and expensive but not my taste. But I feel dumb for wanting to change these things out. .

I would do wood blinds. I think the front of a house should all match. You can still have curtains if you want.

We went with white faux wood blinds with curtains. I love it! We have blackout curtains in the bedrooms and unlined white curtains in the living room.

I generally like something that either covers the full window all the time (e.g., plantation shutters) or something that, during the daytime, you don't see much/at all (e.g., pulldowns or roman shades). We are doing mostly cordless pulldowns in our new house because I really like the way the windows look standalone, and because I don't want to worry about cords with kids!
ETA: we had plantation shutters at our old house and, while i liked them and thought they looked nice, we did have to dust them a lot!

I don't like that the windows don't have grids. That really bothers me. I know at some point we need to replace them and will get Windows with grids at that pint but these plain Windows annoy me!
Would shutters down, blinds up with shutters in the center window look okay?
@KayKay: I hate dusting blinds/shutters so much!! The front of the house is the only place where we will put them for sure.

@Foodnerd81: we had those faux blinds in the old house and they were great for light blocking!! I didn't realize plantation shutters weren't so great at it.

Love your home, looks lovely!
For inside, I really like a combination of a fabric or bamboo/ wooden roman shade and then drapery panels on both sides of the window. It really looks finished to me that way.
I also don't mind the roman shade with a valance on top, three of the four bedrooms are done this way in my home.

We have Roman shades, bamboo to be exact - I love them! They all match from the outside and only a few have curtains over them (kids room) I prefer no curtains in the house

@mediagirl: I just came back to this thread since we have moved in and now I'm really thinking about our window treatments. Currently we have busted roller blinds in C's bedroom and a black garbage bag taped up on G's window. Classy.
But we do have grids on our old windows, which I love, Ours are single pane and need to be replaced soonish, so we had a window guy come out-- did you know the grids add like $400 minimum, depending how many squares you want?? On top of the regular cost of the window. Ugh. Just preparing you, though maybe you already knew that.

@Foodnerd81: oh, super duper. I had no idea.
We actually found the grids in our garage and put them into the windows on top. The house looks so much better with them!

@mediagirl: that's awesome! Why would they have removed them??
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
@Foodnerd81: my only guess is because it makes it easier to clean without them in there? I have no idea.

We just had plantation shutters installed on our dining room and living room windows (2 double windows) and it was $1800. They are pricey. I love them, but too much $$.
We loved our cellular shades we had at the old house- then had curtains for inside when we wanted total privacy.

@LulaBee: you don't have any photos of your cellular shades and curtains together, do you? I haaattttee the broken roller blinds we have.
