Pushing was worse than pre-epi contractions. Especially when they would only let me push every other contraction because baby's heart rate was dipping. Then when I was ready to push out I had to wait for the attending and breathe through multiple contractions when my body just wanted to push!

LO was sunny side up and got stuck and pinched a nerve in my hip. Contractions were nothing compared to that and the epidural did nothing for it.

@macintosh: I can't imagine not pushing when I had to! I couldn't control it.

Epidural placement for sure both times. They tried 3 times to place it with N and 2 times to place it with E. I ended up needing a blood patch after E to stop the spinal fluid from leaking. It was awful. I was almost certain that I was dying.

Putting in the IV. Apparently my veins have a lot of valves in them so they poked me so many times before they could get it right. I had a huge bruise bc of it after leaving the hospital. Another one is the cervical check. I was about 6-7 cm dilated (no epi yet) and the midwife thought she felt something odd with my amniotic sac and continued to keep reaching up and rubbing it. Turned out to be like a wrinkle in my sac but ouch!

All of it? Haha. I'll never forget the contractions but they were definitely worse with pitocin. No breaks in between them, I couldn't breathe well or speak to DH, it was INTENSE. I really wanted didn't want the epidural but I caved by transition and got it in the nick of time at 9cm.

LO1: Cervical checks.
LO2: Saying goodbye to LO1 when I left for the hospital. I didn't know it at the time but I must have been in transition since baby came about 30 min later. Trying to act like I wasn't in incredible pain was rough and I must have done and awful job because LO was bawling.

Passing his shoulders. But that was nothing compared to contractions. It felt like I was big ripped in half and they were right on top of each other for hours.

@youboots: yes the cervical checks were insane! I guess I had a posterior cervix and the doctor couldn't find the opening so she was digging her fingers up there - it took her three tries to find it. Completely stalled my labor because it hurt so bad.
The epidural hurt and it felt really gross when it went in (and seemed to take so long!) but honestly it was absolutely nothing compared to those pitocin contractions!

@artsyfartsy: 1) arm IV and 2) failed attempt at placing a catheter (nurse had no idea how and ended up having to go get someone else :/)

The stitches I had after LO1. They kept getting caugt no matter what I wore down there. They also didn't dissolve until like 9 weeks.
With LO2 it was my labor completely stopping and having to be put on pitocin because my water was broke

The monitor pushing on my tummy during contractions - ouch! Cervical checks were also super painful for me

Nothing was worse than ctx bit if I have to pick it would be recovery from my huge episiotomy. I'm 5 months pp and occasionally it still twinges. Sex still hurts.

Not going to lie, my csection seems like a walk in a park after reading this thread. Kind of want to thank my baby for being breech after reading this. It hurt to cough and laugh for a few days but it doesn't sound comparable to labor and pushing!

The tearing, and then the waiting for the next contraction with the baby's head in the birth canal after the tear. It felt like I was being torn apart, while being sliced with a million knives, while on fire.

Fourth degree tearing + fractured tailbone + manual evacuation of my uterus long after the epi wore off.

My back hurt really bad for 2 days after from the epidural, like one big bruise and it rubbed every time I got in and out of bed at the hospital. I had plenty of pain meds during labor so the contractions were never that bad! I did have antibiotics given due to being strep positive and they were cold so they hurt flowing in and made me shiver. When they went to do the 2nd dose and I said how much it bothered me being cold the nurse said they could just let them come up to room temperature before giving them to me. Not sure why the first nurse didn't do that!!

Ring of fire. Worst pain I've ever felt. I let out this horrible animalistic sound....will never forget it

The ring of fire was very real for me with LO1. (He was born with his hand in his face).

the intense contractions with LO1 - my labor was so intense and fast, and they were on top of one another. I got the epi at 10 cm. ha.
with LO2, honestly the worst was getting the epidural (and that wasn't even bad). the most painful, for me, was the emotional pain when they whisked LO out of the room because she had meconium in her fluid and they couldn't get her to cry. and no one updated me.

The contractions were definitely the worst part for me...
But there was a moment after the nurse inserted the IV when she squeezed the IV bag really hard and intense pain shot down to the insertion area. Idk why she did that, but it hurt so much I yelled at her... This was before my epidural, so I was definitely not in the nicest frame of mind either

Stitches. I had an unmedicated labor, so they gave me a local for the stitches ... It didn't really work. It was horrible!!!!

F-ing catheter. They left it in for like 8 hours. Drove. me. NUTS. But the pain from my herniated disc while pushing was what was really unbearable.

DS - Absolutely pitocin contractions!!
DD - The five tries to get an IV placed hurt only slightly less than the ring of fire. Just kidding, that was terrible.

@Ms. RV: yeeeeah, it turns out the epidural doesn't touch anything having to do with a pinched nerve. I learned that the hard way, too. I could hardly breathe it hurt so bad.
eggplant / 11408 posts
@lawbee11: oh gosh, that was horrible, too. The midwife kept twirling the cord and massaging my uterus to get it to come out, and I wanted to throw up. I thought that was supposed to be the easy part!

Cervical checks I'm still bitter about them. Only one nurse was gentle. The other two shoved their fingers all over the place. It was awful.

Maybe the foley bulb insertion... I was induced, so I had no idea what was yet to come, but that foley insertion was so bad it almost made me pass out!

Is it bad that I don't remember anything being bad. My water broke, contractions weren't that bad when I got my epidural, but I wa shaking so hard/bad/cold that I got it. So I don't even remember what contractions felt like. I didn't feel anything pushing and I don't remember recovery being that bad.
pomegranate / 3921 posts
Contractions were the worst for me. They started hard and fast after my water broke and kept coming like that for five hours. I actually felt like I got a break when I was pushing (not WHILE pushing) because I had the longest break in between contractions that I had during the entire labor. I hadn't gone to sleep (water broke right as I'd been getting into bed) and so I was actually dozing off in between pushing contractions.

@jlm22: for what it's worth, as bad as the pain of labor was, it was gone pretty much as soon as baby was delivered! My second is due in March, and I'm definitely planning to go sans meds again. But, if there's one thing I learned the first time around, it's that birth hurts, and I will never judge anyone again for their decisions when it comes to handling it!!

The epidural never got to this one spot so that one spot was sooo painful the whole time!
coconut / 8861 posts
Contractions. With both of my kids, my labors started with contractions. They're hard to forget when you have to wait hours for an epidural. Also, peeing after labor and delivery is pretty painful. It's worse when you can't and have to be catheterized as a result.
